Just ordered my first alienware, and I'm planning to replace the HDD with SSD, if its possible.

Anyone of you changed it to SSD?

    Will it be worth it?

Can recommend Brand/Model and how much it would normally cost?

Im excited to receive my new laptop.

    Thanks.

First, how much are you willing to spend?
How much space do you think you will need at least?

The M11x series can take any 2.5" SATA drive. Which M11x revision do you have? (e.g. R1)

I care mostly on speed. Because for those other files, I can put it in my spare HDD.

Size, 64 or 120 would be fine.

    Budget is around $200.

By the way, the ssd in an mbair is it the fastest or just low/mid range?

My wife is using an mbair 11", and im amazed on the speed. I wish atleast the same or faster for my m11.

Edit: I got the R3 version

The R3 can support SATA 3 SSDs. Meaning that you can support the newer faster 6GB/s SSDs.

Most SSDs are extremely fast. its hard to judge someitmes. MB Airs can have different ones there is no set SSD for each laptop. MBairs have SATA 2 so they are slower end (3GB/s).
For the M11x You can buy any SSD as long as it is 2.5''

With 200 bucks you should be able to get anywhere from 64-120. I'd suggest Amazon or Newegg for that.

okay thanks man. By the way, is it easy to replace the Drive? I have never opened a laptop before, though I do replace my desktop hardware quite a lot.

By they way, I just noticed on your sig, I got almost the same specs with your R3, minus the SSD ofcpourse :)

How's the performance? I just ordered mine, have to wait for a couple of days.

Mines arriving tomorrow haha. But I've had the r1 and r2 and they are awesome. The r3 is supposedly 20% faster than the r2. The hard drive is incredibly easy to replace. Remove the back panel and it's right there in a corner. Just slid out the old one and slid in the ssd. If the ports don't match up make sure to use the converter that comes on the r3s hard drive. It's a little black rectangle. You'll know what I mean if you need it.

oh ok. im now browsing newegg, what brand is good?

would any brand be good enough?

Corsair Force Series 3 CSSD-F120GB3-BK 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

    OCZ Solid 3 SLD3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC

Patriot Pyro PP120GS25SSDR 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

OCZ Agility 3 AGT3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

these 4 are the ones im considering, as they fit at around my $200 budget.

Any one of these is fine?

Just make sure you read the reviews. All I've heard about it is chatter (albeit very enlightened chatter). Just before you go make such an investment always do research. Good luck :)
