I'm looking for a small, portable netbook/laptop and I think with the power and size of the M11x this might be what I need. I was wondering though if anyone has tried to run Dreamweaver and Photoshop with the $599 version with the Core 2 Duo and 2 GB of ram and whether or not it runs it well? I design websites and am looking for a system that I would be able to work on my sites with while I'm away from my desktop. If it does run DW and PS, would I need to upgrade right away to 4GB of ram to help the system run those programs or would the 2GB be ok? Thanks for any help.

Believe me, it can... 2GB should be OK!

Photoshop is a slightly different story - CS5 lags noticeably, especially when zooming or panning the image or dragging the image window across the workspace. A Wacom would have a slight delay with larger images as well - in case if you use one.
Photoshop is still very useable, e.g. the person that tried using it on my m11x for a short period of time defined it as practically lagless. Yet I definitely noticed the issues and was irritated by those, so be warned. -
CS5 in general runs clean for me, a couple tweeks here or there and its very stable on the R2 i7 OC'd.. Its a big program set so I imagine there are certain uses that it may lag, but very usable for me..

My M11X R1 with 4GB RAM can, but I'd say it'd be hard to work with photoshop on such a little screen.

then again, i run all my systems highly optimized.
30 processes or less at idle, 400mb ram usage or less at idle, and processor load at 0% at idle, no antivirus, and tons of services turned off that i dont use.
i dont believe in antivirus software, does more harm then good. everyones better off running a virus scan every once in awhile then have an active scanner bog down your system. -
I know this is the easy option, but I just looked up the CS5 Adobe Creative Suite 5 Production Premium specs.
Adobes CS5 recommended specs.
- 64-bit support required: Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor (Intel Core2 Duo or AMD Phenom® II recommended);
Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Phenom II required for Adobe Premiere® Pro - 64-bit operating system required: Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1 (Service Pack 2 recommended) or Windows 7
- 2GB of RAM (4GB or more recommended)
- 16.3GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash-based storage devices)
- 1280x900 display (1280x1024 recommended) with qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card, 16-bit color, and 256MB of VRAM
- Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU-accelerated performance in Adobe Premiere Pro; visit the Adobe Premiere Pro system requirements page for the latest list of supported cards
- Some GPU-accelerated features in Adobe Photoshop® require graphics support for Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0
- Some features in Adobe Bridge rely on a DirectX 9capable graphics card with at least 64MB of VRAM
- 7200 RPM hard drive for editing compressed video formats; RAID 0 for uncompressed
- Adobe-certified card for capture and export to tape for SD/HD workflows
- OHCI-compatible IEEE 1394 port for DV and HDV capture, export to tape, and transmit to DV device
- Sound card compatible with ASIO protocol or Microsoft Windows Driver Model
- DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (DVD+-R burner for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
- Java Runtime Environment 1.5 (32 bit) or 1.6
- QuickTime 7.6.2 software required for QuickTime features
- Adobe Flash® Player 10 software required to play back DVD projects exported as SWF files
- Broadband Internet connection required for online services*
The M11xR1 'may' struggle a VERY tiny bit, but I'm using a single core Pentium 4 3.2Ghz 32-bit Desktop PC for Adobe Fireworks and quite often have tens of layered vectors and my ye olde P4 can handle it.
If you're young and used to computing devices with zero lag, then I'd say the minimum would be an M11xR2 i5 with 4GB RAM.
If you can handle a second or two lag now and then, then you'll be fine with an M11xR1 with 4GB RAM is my guess.
Dreamweaver, people still use that??? It'd run on a Pentium II with 192MB RAM and 333Mhz processor. - 64-bit support required: Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor (Intel Core2 Duo or AMD Phenom® II recommended);

Cs5 is a ram hog. I suspect that 2g's would make for a frustrating experience for you, particularly on an r1 and utilizing a single hdd.
If you can stretch your budget slightly you should be able to pick up a refurbished r2 with an i5 and 4 gigs from the dell outlet. Dell's refurbs come with the same warranty as new units.
If your budget is fixed or you're dead set against a refurb then give the base r1 a go. You can always upgrade your ram later. If it doesn't meet your expectations you can always return it.
Lastly, be aware that ajslay's suggestion to "pinmod" your r1 to reach similar performance to an r2 requires you to violate your warranty. Take a peek at the 20+ page thread above about hardware failure before deciding to go this route.
Imo, you're better off just buying an r2 if you plan to pinmod a new r1 as any hardware repair required will more then offset the difference in price between units. -
I agree that 2GB would be a bit tight for CS5. I have used it on both the R1 and R2 (both overclocked, but no pinmod on the R1, just software). The experience is MUCH better on the R2. For the record, mine is i7/8GB/256GB SSD.
