I've been trying to record some streaming audio streams and I realized after a I tried a couple different programs the only input they could take was the microphone in...After some quick googling, it appears dell and hp cripple the sound cards so you can't directly use the output of the sound card to record anything?

This is total bull IMO, I'd love to hear any thoughts from our members. Am I just doing this wrong? I have successfully done this many times (recording my sound card's output) on the old mac book pro and on my old 'home built' pc.

I tried a variety of programs. Don't remember all of them but one was Audio Edit Magic and the other mp3bymp3.

The mp3bymp3 was linked from cnet, where people were talking about this problem about not being able to record directly from the sound card on dell or hp laptops.

Just tried audacity, which is what i've used before extensively. Get nothing. Inputs only from the 'microphone'. :ugh:

I don't have anything plugged into the microphone jack. I am trying to record whatever is being output from the sound card - so whatever sounds the computer is making (ie. music, but the beeps and bloops of windows 7 would get included in the record).

This should be a simple thing to do but it appears I am only able to record from the microphone - which apparently there is something built in to the laptop that records sound - you dont actually need a microphone.

But basically the only input for recording audio is the microphone jack/microphone which picks up what you say or whatever.

Anybody that has tried to record streaming audio on a dell should have run into this problem I am thinking. Only workaround I read was some kind of cable which just takes the output (from the headphone jack) and connect it straight into the input (microphone jack) and record that. I am trying to avoid that.

just start up the recording suite audacity, Look for a selection that calls itself "Wave Out" or "What U Hear" or similar and select that as the source for recording. Another alternative is testing out streaming music recorder.

Would using the realtek drivers versus the Dell possibly overcome that?
