I'm interested to see if any of the former holders of the R1 model , while the current owners of the R3 model could say whether the duo SB cpu + gt540m is much , much better in games than the C2D cpu and the gt335m .
Is the difference is so large that it is worth considering replacing R1 to R3?
It would be nice to see comparison like that :
game x I had xx fps on R1 and I have now xx fps on R3 in the same level of settings.
-
I can only say that there is a HUGE different between gaming performance for R1 and R3.
Although the difference is pretty much significant between R1 and R2, R3 is way more significant.
Dual Core just cannot follow the 2nd Generation of i-series... -
R1 pinmodders will disagree in 3.2.1... just watch
-
on my pin modded R1 iv never had a game lag. ever. and once i do the 2ghz mod, even better.
im already beating R2's without a problem. -
-
Wait guys then why they made a R3 if it plays almost like a R1? I thought the new GPU was a huge difference.
-
-
drivers wont make a huge improvement, unless theres something seriously wrong =P -
-
There are some fairly simple facts to consider here that people aren't.
Most users won't overclock/pinmod/try to turn their computers in a molten glob of goo. Seriously. I'm fairly certain that the majority of users will open the box, install software and just go.
I haven't used an R3 (yet) but I'm also fairly certain then that the out of the box differences between an R1 and an R3 are sizable, especially if the R3 is sporting a Core i-7.
Sure you can pinmod/overclock/claim your genitals are bigger than mine, but at the end of the day, most people simply don't care. The majority of vocal people on a forum like this are the obvious exception. -
I also love how people try to defend their laptops.
What is the point of 2nd generation of i-series when there is ony 10%~20% increase in performance from the old Dual Core?
Seriously guys, grow up. We all have to admit that R3 is significantly better in performance than R1. -
I cannt say anything, just waiting for how these m11x run the same games, do the same bench, and then we can see the distance between such laptops.
it's better to create a new thread for ppl who want to compete together. -
-
Kind of reminds me of the Mac owners who come into Alienware threads and try to justify why their systems are betters than ours and how AW is overpriced. -
There is also significant difference between R1 and R2 and saying that R3 is only 10~20% better than R1...? So R2 is 0~10% better?
I can clearly see higher performances in R1 and R2 with both in "pure" condition.
I noticed how R1 users compare fully overclocked R1 with "pure" R2 and argue that there is no real difference when there still is.
I suggest them to look at performance videos and thorough comparison tests. -
a stock R1 gets about 6100 in 3dmark. and a stock R2 gets about 6900-7000.
NOT much difference. and you know what? why would i be jealous of someones R3? when MY R1 can beat it. im also not saying the cpu is bad in any of the revisions. but sandy bridge cant even overclock. the R1 and R2 has way more potential.
also DavyGT thinks he knows the voltage regulator for the R2 and maybe the R1. and we can get maybe 1.05v on the gpu. even better. -
Edit: The Sandy Bridges CPU's overclock like swiss cheese. The i7 2600k/i5 2500k can overclock so much they beat the 990x/980x in 4 core using games; however I'm not sure about the laptop series of Sandy bridges. -
sees the game. I mean come'on, you're practically saying if I get 99FPS in Doom 1, it's worth it to upgrade to the R2 to get 105FPS. You can barely see the difference. No point, no buy. Simple rule to a smart buyer.
-
and everything is controlled from 1 chip, so any overclock would deem something to become unstable. -
But the R2's multi is max 12 (On the i5) whats to stop people upping the FSB to increase performance. Uncle Web says his throttlestop doesn't work with it. Not to say there wont be huge developments down the line just like there has with the R1 and R2.
I'd like and R3 but can't justify the price. I'm getting my i5 today and will have fun tweeking it. Tweeking and testing to get get extra free performance is actually something I enjoy more than just getting a stock R3 opening it and playing. -
Assuming a game is GPU limited (which is quite often when we consider the relative performance of a GT335m/GT540m*) there will simply not be much in it between a 335m and a 540m. The latter might be newer and will have the advantages of potential driver improvements but it simply isn't much better than the 335m it replaces. The architecture of the 540m and it's TDP mean the performance imrpovement was never going to be massive.
Unfortunately with laptops it is very hard to tie down performance improvements to one key component when the rest of the laptop is also different.
There will be some games that will show a massive improvement in performance from the R1 to the R3 but generally these are games that also showed a big improvement moving to the R2 as well. You only need to look at BFBC2 to see this.
In general though if a game is at 99% GPU load on a R1/R2 and is still unplayable, it will probably not be playable on the R3 either.
*Vs something like a GTX460 or higher (desktop cards) -
GapItLykAMaori Notebook Evangelist
A lot of people seem to treat the m11x's as their desktop replacements @_@ I would not be able to live with just the m11x because even the r3 has poor performance compared to desktops (altho for an 11 inch netbook it absolutely outstanding). Most people would buy the m11x as an occassional gaming, portable machine for general use like me. I am VERY glad that i purchased the r1 for 500USD new although if i had all the money in the world i would have undoubtly have purchased the r3 with zero hesitation.
I still dont understand y ppl argue about the performance improvements because its not worlds apart, just a healthy amount maybe not enuf to justify spending 1.2k+ -
3 pages deep and not a single post relevant to the op's question.
Guys, let's stay on target. This thread is about facts and numbers. Personal opinion and speculation doesn't help anyone.
The troll/flamming is getting out of hand here. -
Aside from the R3 getting a fair fight (no mods discovered yet) my R1 can get a 8100 in 3dmark and a fully OCed R2 only gets a few hundred pts. more...
I think that speaks truth.
If i wanted to run prime or some other multi threaded app all day i would have gotten a R2 at my time of purchase since thats what the I series excels at, but i like battery life so in that regard i went with the R1.
Id say both the R1 and R2 are slow in the CPU area untill you mod (TS, PINmod, ect...). if the R3 is just as fast as a OCed R2 out of the box then it will be the BEST option for most of the population that can afford it and don't want to mod.
Will the price of the R3 justify the out of box performance vs the out of box R1? id say that really depends of the user. will the price of a future modded R3 justify the modded performance of the R1? id have to ask, is about 20% more performance worth $400?
My advice to the OP. if you own a R1 and your trying to upgrade, a R3 will give you a nice bump over your R1 (stock vs stock) the only way it will be night and day difference is if your playing CPU demanding games.
Oh and to mohaa7
You should really look at actual numbers and benchmarks before just blurting out things like you are...
Is the I series faster? yes it is. how much does it affect gaming? really depends... its not as cut and dry as you make it. -
Unless you are Statistician, you should be very aware of the fact that there are differences between Actual and Benchmark.
By Actual here, I am talking about things such as FPS, GPU Temperature or anything that one can use to compare two different laptop units. Nothing to do with program generated ratings or scores.
It goes same to you not to blurt things out.
Funny how you don't "tackle" ones who have same opinion as you who also blurted out similar things.
The famous R1 Forever Team. Very funny. -
The fact is that Alienware let the community to make mods/overclocks to the R1 and R2 and not to the R3 (maybe a market strategy that they are now regretful for to let happen, because of the great power that theses notebooks reached, more than they expected, reducing the buying of new products from their company. But its just my supposition), at least by now. It happens. But technology walks at very large steps, so maybe the M11x R3 will pass the R2/R1 in the future. Besides that, the technology inside it is better and newer than the ones inside these last.
In this way, stop the fighting, it is just pointless, the better numbers for R1 and R2 speak for now, and the better specifications for R3 too. So, left to us just the acceptance. -
Wow....
I have only "blurted" proven facts.
Here some more for reference (more meaingless facts i guess) i get 50 FPS avg in TF2, highest settings on a 24man server. never drops below 30 FPS. in portal2 i got a solid 50- 60 FPS avg meduim/high settings unless i was looking into repeated portals which would drop down to about 25 FPS. Homefront i got about 35-40 avg low/med settings with some dips into the teens. Mirrors edge got about 35-40 FPS avg medium settings. FO3 get 50 FPS avg at high settings. Batman gets a good 40-50 FPS medium settings PhsicsX off.
I gues what i was getting at with your posts in this thread is the OP is asking for facts and your just posting things like the R1 sucks because the R3 is better... im just trying to help the OP. not bash people or their systems. but i guess you do what ever make you feel cool. As you still have not contributed anything useful to the OP. -
ok i no i shouldn't get into a war but on pure graphics cards the 335 of the r1 and r2 get 2600~ and 2800~ on 3dmarks vantage
NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
the 540 gt gets anywhere from 3700-4500 thats an increase of 32%-62% increase in performance
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
to me that is some boost in performance and i dont even own an m11x i like my m15x
and i no that synthetic benchmarks don't tell everything -
50% increase in Vantage performance for 50% increase in clocks. -

Bottom line is why buy an old obsolete model ( unless you a broke motha). For a core2duo just to keep up or get ahead, you have to do brain surgery that can risk damaging or voiding the warranty, unless of course it is already out of warranty or you only paid less than $600 for it. Not everyone will open up their machine and start doing mods just so they can brag it is faster than r2 or r3.
R2 and R3 are both better than R1 and R1 users need to accept it.
e.g. R2/R3 is already 6 inches not erect w/o trying
R/1 is only 6 inches fully erect and must use a pump (oc or modding) to increase the size
Natural is always safer and better.
Also R1 is infested with old technology and problems: ( But you only paid less than $600 for it so you get what you paid for)
1.) Bad hinges (Dell will replace with new design one but you still get bad hinges anyway in the beginning, meaning hassle for replacement)
2.) Cosmic Black - The horror of fingerprints (of course slob type of people wouldn't care) Kudos to old school lunar shadow r1 owners.
3.) No USB 3.0 lolz, 800 mhz ram lolz, no bluetooth 3.0 lolz, still stuck w/ 3 series graphics card direct x 10/shader 4.0 lolz, no support for HDMI 1.4 lolz
4.) Core2duo lolz - e.g. see pump example above. -
Your post is surely going to make a lot more R1 users angry and unhappy hahaha.
Unfortunately it is the truth for them... -
I just wish the R2/R3 would drop optimus. I prefer the ability to switch GPUs myself like on the R1.
Also, lol @ the genital jokes, which will surely be removed. Not surprising considering this is the internet where everyone wields their gigantor e-peens like swords.
A side note, I also prefer cosmic black over the soft touch stuff that peels & impregnates itself with oil from your fingers. I mean, really, how hard is it to wipe down your lid every once in a while? I had enough of that stuff on old thinkpads.....I most certainly don't want it now.
Bluetooth itself is meh....so I couldn't really care about 2.1 vs 3.0....they're both crap.
USB 3.0 would be nice.....but by the time I need it, I'll already have another notebook.
Couldn't care less about HDMI 1.4, because the 3D stuff is junk anyways. Maybe in a few years when it matures.....doesn't matter to me either way, I have no depth perception.
The updated GPU stuff would be nice, but honestly....good luck getting playable framerates with all the DX11 bells & whistles turned on.
My R1 plays games just fine.....I don't see what the big deal is with people foaming at the mouth about R1 vs R2 & R3? Who cares?
If they offered an R3 without Optimus & a Cosmic Black option I'd probably be all over that. Until then, I'll just stick with my R1....and in the event it doesn't play something, I'll simply pin-mod it until it does.2.0 Ghz locked, none of that up-and-down turbo nonsense.
-
you know what? the R3 may be newer, but in my opinion its not better. the R3 may also be faster stock, but us R1 owners actually have the balls to do mods and get the most out of our machines. these mods can be pretty complicated and if you own an R1 you can definitely learn a lot. sure the R3 can get over 8k on 3dm06 stock, but the R1 can do the same with mods. if your mod savy the R1 is great (even without) who needs DX11 or usb 3.0. i would use neither. its stupid unless you were running a higher end gpu anyway. that could actually handle dx11 without getting bogged down.
-
So the R3 is better than the R1 stock but in your opinion it's not better because you have to do mods to the R1 to get it to match the R3 and that takes more balls?
I mean fair enough if I had an R1 I certainly wouldn't bother upgrading to an R3, but THAT is just ridiculous... -
-
. All you said isn't really included in the R3 apart from the GPU. I get no fingerprints on my Cosmic Black M11X, it's because I don't wipe my butt with everything. Natural is for computer n00bies or people who don't like the hassle. My warranty has "naturally" ran out. So now it's a good time to pinmod, except I have the SLG PLL. You're like the people who want a 8 core CPU from AMD, no point of upgrading so early because it's useless. Money doesn't make something better, usually it justifies the difference but in some cases, it doesn't. Yes, the R3 is better for people who want the quick use without fiddling. I think mostly everyone here at NBR doesn't rip out the motherboard and dip it in the toilet
. Most people take care of what they do. Modding is standard for any machine. The i7 2600k was made to be modded, and it's speed is UNR34L (4.8Ghz max stable). I hope you have learn't your lesson that money alone doesn't make a PC better and could you please edit the um...thing

1.Optimus. Disgusting little thing, just as useless as phySX. It gives problems and is so frikken' annoying.
2.No VGA port. Since you're so rich hating old technology go buy your self a HDMI to VGA or something like that.
3.R1 may not have more cores, but can beat the OC clock speed.
4.DavyGT supports R1, he is god of overclocking in this forum.
5.No OC for the poor sandy bridges
6.i7 is waste compared to i5. DO you really need hyperthreading?
7.7 is my favourite number
So I hope you see through and realize that R1 can beat the R2/R3 in ways.
Now lets end this flame war and get your money ready for the R4 -
it is stupid to compare m11x with powerful desktops or even bigger laptops. This is a very powerful small portable machine and that's all. It doesn't mean that you can play ALL THE GAMES on it. R1, R2 and R3 are weak machines in power compared to any big monster...
-
You ask to end this flame war after you flame all the R2/R3 users.
Impossible to end at this stage as some R2/R3 users are bound to have a visit here lol. -
-
Wonder if Mods are enjoying reading these posts. -
-
some people dont have the time
some people dont know how
but then.. theres the people who are willing to put time into there machines to make them better. and thats what a lot of R1 users do. and there willing to get the absolute most out of their machine. the R1,R2 and R3 are all powerful machines for there size. the R2 and 3 might have faster cpu's but that can be fixed on an R1 rather simply. iv also noticed the R1 can achieve higher gpu clocks then the other revisions. (optimus issue, i think) -
540m 335m
core speed- 672 450 49%
shader speed- 1344 1080 24%
memory speed- 900 1066 -15% -
Just 2 cents in argument.
For m11x as for an ultra-portable the factor of battery life is also important. The ratio CPU_power/battery_life is way better for R1 compare to R2. The whole point of R3 (at least I see it from this angle) is marginal performance increase from R2 but with a battery life of an R1. If better battery life would be confirmed for R3, then it's a descend upgrade - R2 power with R1 battery life.

I thought the stock memclock on the 335 was 790mhz?
