how interesting, i might attempt this myself, but im a brush person so it might take some time :p

you can also panel line the case with designs, i just saw a guide on that and i think itd work on just about any laptop lid if you are careful

I just finished my M11x in a sort of electric blue. I'll post pics as soon as I can get my camera back from my girlfriend.

Love your work ejohnson, keep it up!

I have a question... What type of plastic is underneath the rubber coating? My M14xR2 is peeling off, but I'm not too fond of taking the whole laptop apart for repainting. If I just remove the rubber coating, will the bare plastic look good?

The bare plastic will look just like it does where the soft touch is peeling off :)

But really, you may damage the plastic under there while taking off the softtouch. I have seen using a scotchbritch pad and alchohal to remove the coating.

Hello peepz I want to customize my M11x. I own the M11x R1 and would love to mod it as well. Firstly painting is out of the question as I'm not comfortable disassembling the whole laptop. So I decided to go the easy route and apply a skin to my back cover. I would love to skin it to either Maranello Red or the Nebula red, the skin making company wants a sort of template kind so the design lines and grooves are prominent..is there any1 who can you make me a template in adobe photoshop that replicates the back cover of the laptop including the lines, grooves, alienhead, length and height so I could print it? regards

If you are looking for skins eBay has quite a few of them. I too have been looking for a template for a M11x skin, but so far no luck... I may get off my working @$$ one day and make one. If I do I`ll be sure to pass it to you.

If you are thinking of mods, here is a thread with a list and links to easy mods. Yeah they are (for the most part) under the hood mods... but just make sure you keep a map of what you are doing, stay in a static free environment, and be careful. It is much easier than you would think. Also there are tunZ of videos on youtube for help with the M11x when inside the little bugger.

Hope this helps. If you want to do something, dont be afraid to do it... just have the respect to do it right.

Edit - Found a skin template! Here ya go... use photoshop to size it.

Your paint jobs are impressive, ejohnson! I don't need paint, but I a desperate to remove or seal off the rubberized coating on my M14xR2. I have severe chemical sensitivities to a lot of plastics, rubber, solvents, ink, etc. I needed to replace my dead laptop in a hurry so I chatted with a Dell rep to narrow my choices to PCs made of metal, not plastic. She told me the Alienware PCs were made with aluminum, not plastic, covers. She didn't mention the rubberized coating all over it, or that the top cover is plastic under the rubber. Turns out I would have been better with hard plastic. I have been extremely sick for almost a month and need to find a solution so I can work. I need to get the rubber coating off of it, or find a skin or something that would seal all the rubber parts. You obviously remove the rubber before you paint - would you tell me how you do that? I would like to remove all of it, even on the palmrests, etc., but I'm not as concerned about the inside covers since I can use an external keyboard and monitor and keep the PC cover closed. If anyone has seen a skin that would seal the rubber, please tell me where to get it. Before I saw your thread, I was thinking about using clear tape (the strong mailing tape) to cover everything that won't stop outgassing these toxic (to me) chemicals. Do you think that would cause a heat problem if I was careful not to cover any vents? Thanks for any help you can give me!

To remove the rubber coating you need to use denatured alcohol and start scrubbing.

Eventually I have plans to remove my soft touch coating and do a full camo paint job on the laptop, mouse, and my razer ferox speakers.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it! How awful will it look with the rubber off? Does it just look like aluminum under the top cover? What about the wrist rest area? I would try a skin but they all seem to be made of vinyl, which would close my airways for sure.

Ebay. Guy was parting out a m11x. He had the motherboard and bottom half in one auction, and the lcd (no screen, just top) in another auction.
I have spares of everthing else.

Ehh... nevermind on that... this case is trashed. every part of the shell is broken in some place.

But, It seems that the motherboard is still good :)

Going to take it all part tonight and swap some parts to see if I can fire it up.

Very good as well! My E30 has been in storage for over 12 months which sucks but what do you do.

Just grabbed an m11x R1 for really cheap and am going to use it as my primary for a couple months. Noticed you are the author of like every thread I've read pertaining to them! 2 things; Could you pm me your phone number? I have a couple general questions you could probably answer in a flash. And also, I'm saving up money for a larger gaming notebook and am pretty set on an m14x but don't know if it would fit in my backpack. Looking for someone local with one so I can try putting it in my bag. Thanks. :) -Aaron

Yeah I will shoot you a PM with my number.
I can pretty much fix anything on the r1s, got a pile of parts laying around too.

My e30 (the convertible) has been living in the garage for the past like 2 years... I replaced the garage door, but never finished putting the rails up.. so its been sealed in there for along time.
The 325ix though has had a nice life towing VWs into work :)

I can pick a day to bring the m11x, m14x, and m17x and you can swing by and take a test drive.

Its a vinyl sheet that just sticks onto the laptop. search 3M di-noc carbon fiber for more info on the stuff.
Its easy to work with, but corners can be a bit of a pain to do.

No need to sand anything, just stick it on there.

I have heard those dont fit so great and they are hard to get everything aligned perfect.

    Painting or the carbon decal?
50$ plus parts for the carbon
    100$ for the paint.

I have to take the computer all the way apart to do either of them, so while I have it open it gets cleaned and new AS5 thermal paste gets added since its a extra 3 screws to remove the heatsink.
