So, what you're telling me, I should save my money and get the 1gb with the i5 vs the i7 and 2 gb vram? Wouldn't the difference between them be more visable in the long run? Would me getting the i7 and 2 gb vram be future proofing enough to warrent the additional cost?

The i5 and i7 have nothing to do with the VRAM. the VRAM is built into the GPU. Get the i5 or i7 depending on your money situation and then get the GT540m with 1gb.

Your right. :p I thought it was discontinued like the m15x. I've heard lots of problems with it but I'll update to include it. Thanks.

I think I understand Beanman1000 Deevu. When I purchased my R3 the video care either 1gb or 2gb wasnt an option it all depended on which CPU you got. The i7 comes with the 2gb GPU and the i5 comes with the 1gb GPU. There was no way to choose the GPU other then that way.

Ahhhh... I see. Well Ill rephrase to say if you can afford the i7 model then go for it. If you cannot then go for the i5. The gain will be minimal at best for right now. In the future you may see more significant gains when you deal with games that are right on the border of playability.

edit: Updated the reserved post with your question as well as this answer. Thanks Kurt for the explanation. My R3 was a replacement to my R2 so I did not know this.

Interesting. A friend pointed out that the difference between them on the PC benchmark score is significant, with the i5 in the 1900's and the i7 in the 3000's. Am I understanding correctly that this doesn't translate into an actual 40% in gameplay? My main concern is not bveing able to play games on ulta, rather being able to still play new games in a few years on medium.

Are you sure he was comparing the correct i5 to i7? It is much more minimal than a 40% boost.

However this being said I will state two things:
    1) don't get this machine and expect ultra in all games. Most games can be playable at ultra but in heavy fights or what not the fps can drop to sub 25. For instance I play sc2 at ultra but a huge baneling assault (150+) makes it drop a bit. So i typically choose high for most games.
    2) like stated earlier if money is not an issue for the CPU then go for the i7, I've had nothing but a great experience with it.

Basically if the game is well optimized for pc you can play at ultra graphics if it isn't, expect medium to high to get a steady 30fps.

Which models of the M11x have the lid that is made of aluminum? All of them? I'm a sucker for the aluminum lids like on the m17x R1 and R2.

I do not think any of the m11x's have them with aluminum. It's a hard plastic.

This thread is really great for us newbies who are trying to get into the m11x crew.

    ..so about the wireless card...

    My options are:
Intel Wireless 1000 Card - European
    Intel Wireless LAN 6205 2x2 (802.11a/b/g/n) Card - European
    Killer Wireless-N 1103 - EUR

Which should I choose? I rarely play online games, but I do need to stream live lectures and download big files quickly.

The killer one sounds better because, well it has the word 'killer' in it (ha) but other than that I'm clueless.

Are the oem options? If still waiting on system try it with avail card first IMO

Killer has good reports so far (so did 6200!)

When I purchased my R1 there were no optional network cards. It worked ok for me until some physical dmg. If you have not purchased and if current crop of M11x in your area only offers one choice then try it before replacing.

If those cards are listed options then get the killer IMO

Considering it is a gaming laptop I figured that's what most people were looking at. Some games allow you to increase VRAM that is used but typically doesn't improve performance at all. But ill add that.

I've made a few edits/suggestions above and fixed a few typos and a few changes consistency (Nvidia/NVidia). Please incorporate them. Thanks!

I added info about the "powered" USB port on the left side that can be used to power and charge other devices even when the notebok is off. It will automatically stop providing power when the battery level drops to 10% to preserve the battery.
Also, you were pretty specific about them all only having one microphone when, in fact, the R3 has two (used for noise canceling). DisplayPort was not mentioned and saying "only HDMI" wrongly excludes it. Ethernet is not a port, as indicated by 802.11, so I actually named the port. ;) It only mentioned Dell sending a tech to fix your hinges in warranty with nothing about fixing them out of warranty. Dell announced that they are fixing the hinges outside of warranty, though I do not think that they send an in house tech to do it. This means that I really only needed to add that information with very little change needed to your in-warranty statement.

The R1 has a well-documented overclock issue. Many units can not run stably with the overclock enabled in the BIOS settings (simple On/Off selection). They will BSOD. Even those that are stable still have issues like the one I described, though people do not often make the connection (it's likely a driver issue).

Anyway, I think you should also change any reference to what each model is "marketed" or "targetted" to. Each is a successor to the last and they do not "target" anyone with older models or actively "market" them. It is mostly a distinction that is only relevant to those buying used or refurbished. It would be better to descrbe who they are most appropriate[ for.

    Hope that helps. :)

I did not do any in-line edits to this section but it should be pointed out that Async mode is NOT desireable because it adds latency. Also, the R1/R2's GT335M supports ALL DX games before and after DX9/10. The current wording states that it "only" supports DX9/10 games when, in fact, it supports games built for older and newer versions of Direct X. What it doesn't support are the DX11 features. You may want to mention that some HDDs have a drop sensor and that it can cause the notebook to lock up if triggered at the wrong time. This happened often happened on my R1 with Hitachi drive, especially when closing the notebook and flipping it over to set it down without covering the vents. Dell suggests uninstalling the STMicroelectronics device/driver if this is a problem for you. I see it installed on my R3 with Western Digital HDD even though I'm not sure that it has a drop sensor (may be there just in case to support whatever HDD they throw in).

Im back Deevu still working on this guide are you. You should omit this part "DO NOT buy the GT540m with 2GB of VRAM - it is a waste of $100. Your computer will never use this (unless you are doing heavy visual graphics... and even then). " remember its not a standalone choice its a CPU choice R3 i5 only comes with 1GB Vram and the i7 comes with the 2GB Vram 540GT.

We should probably add that the R1 and R2 can be upgraded to add internal Bluetooth with a Dell Wireless DW365 adapter and the that R3 requires the DW375 adapter. Unlike the DW365, the DW375 requires a motherboard-specific special cable to connect but I found that the cable was already included (may not always be the case). They are available cheaply on eBay (under $20) but usually do not include an appropriate screw. Dell charges $40 to order the 365 and, last I checked, did not offer the 375. You can usually salvage a screw from a less important and more easily accessible place in the computer. You need to make sure it is enabled in the system BIOS/CMOS setup. Even though it may work without installing software, you may need to download the full software/Bluetooth stack from Dell. In my case, the service tag tried to give me M11X R1/2 downloads for my M11X R3 and I needed to manually specify the model (needed the file to get A2DP to work though my mouse worked fine without it for months).

    Um, no.

The GT540 has no where near enough GPU grunt or memory bandwidth to make use of 2GB of VRam.

Or in other words any game that would require that amount (rather than using it as fast cache for no benefit) would simply be unplayable as the GPU's lack of shader horsepower, not to mention its weak back end would become the limiting factor.

I would love to see a GT335m hooked up to the SB based CPU's to see the "real" performance boost the 540m offers.

I can't be bothered to go into the stupid design decisions Nvidia made with the GF118 (GF108) as I will be here typing all night. All I have to ask is: Why the hell did they chop the ROP count in half per memory controller vs the GS116 (GF106). If they hadn't have done this (and not designed a warp scheduler / dispatch engine that leaves 16 shaders twiddling their thumbs) the low end Mobile / desktop chips could have actually been decent.

EDIT: One thing I do find interesting about the R1 is just how limiting the "OC" of 1.6GHz actually is. I have seen relatively massive gains from only a modest OC to 1.9GHz. To put this into some sort of context BFBC2 is basically unplayable on the R1 at 1.6GHz yet add only 300Mhz to the CPU and all of a sudden it is playable. The same can also be said of Crysis 2. I really do wish Dell / Alienware had used the correct 1.73GHz OC the U7300/U4100 are technically capable of.

    Hello !

    I'm planning on switching my R1 to R3 , and i have to choose between two CPU ( I5 - 2467M or maybe I7 2617M for 45+€ )

Maybe i'll have to choose between even more CPU. Wich one should i take ? Yes i want performance, but i also need Perf / price good ratio.

CPU i should avoid ? CPU i should choose cause they overclock well ? etc.

Please give me some advices ;)

    They both OC well.
You may get 3-5fps out of newer games in the long run by getting the i7 and thats the far end of the scale.

Hey guys, been a while since I've been on this side of the forum and as such I've noticed a couple posts asking about questions for the m11x - which model, what should I include, tech specs, etc...

    so:

    1) Was curious if there is anything I should update? It's been about 5 months since I've updated anything serious on this post.

    2) Thought I'd bump it back to give some information to those asking of it.

It all still seems pretty relevant DeeVu. I guess the only thing to look at would be the pricing pf each model and availability for the R1 and R2.

The R4 will also be heading around the corner in the coming months so that could be something to consider for buyers who don't need their M11x straight away. If a true Kepler GPU is used, we could see quite an increase in efficiency and performance.

The CPUs have been updated, or at least changed, on the R3. For example, I ordered an R3 a couple days ago, and it had the i5 2467, while you have the i5 2537 listed in the first post.

I believe they made a change on the i7.

I don't know how much difference this makes. I looked into it for a bit and didn't find anything exciting.

Edit: it's the base speed: it's been bumped up from 1.4 to 1.6, apparently. How much of a difference does this make? I have no idea.
