If the R3 is coming out, I'm going to be pretty damn piseed. I just bought the R2 a few days ago, and I don't want to know that I missed the opputunity for a better one by a few days.

It'll be cool... But disheartening at the same time...

    According to a Dell Rep...

"M11X R2 is temporarily discontinued and will be available soon online"

I can only think 3 possible reasons

    1) i7-640M is out of stock and it's being restocked
    2) i7-640M is discontinued and new processors are going to take it's place
    3) i7-640M is being restocked, while new processors are being implmented at the same time

I got my unopned, warranty'ed i7 on craigslist last week from a guy that bought from an ebay seller that doesnt refund.
I paid $800 so hopefully I can sale for that much.

I'm pretty happy with my i5, 8GB. It is plenty fast for all the games I play, and I can't imagine how much more powerful it (the R3) will be (if you want moderate battery life at all...there's not much room to compromise for more power). I also paid $720 with bluetooth... if you buy the R3 upon first release, you will be paying a premium for every component. I waited to buy this because originally I looked at it, and with basic upgrades like 4GB ram and a basic 7200 rpm HDD upgrade, it was around $1200, which is serious gaming computer territory, and I couldn't justify that. Plus, if they add new stuff...think of the optimus issues at first with the R2....

Even if they do slap a newer processor in the R3, which is a possibility... what's the big freaking deal? Whatever they put in there is going to be low voltage, just like the 640M, and therefore come with all the bottlenecks associated with the R2.

and with the R3, the longer you wait the better... the early adopters will probably end up paying big bucks, and then later in the year the price will drop more and more... when they gotta unload the things for 800 bucks just like with the R2.

I don't know if the low voltage is going to make as much of a difference this time around. That's a key advantage to Sandy Bridge, and it may be less constrained from the get go.

You have 14 days to return it. Consider doing so and tell them it's because you want to wait for the R3.

^i'm with you regarding the early adopters. especially in something as dynamic as computer technology, whatever you buy today is going to be "outdated" inside of a year, and it might already be outdated at the time of purchase anyway.

there is no way i would have paid anything close to $1,000 for an R1 last year. this year, i bought one for $649, which is a ~33% drop in ~9 months. totally worth it to me now, but not at $1,000.

there are those who need the absolute latest and greatest, and they pay a premium for that right. that's a perfectly fine approach, but not mine. i like to wait a year and get whatever was the latest and greatest the previous year, and save a bundle of money. furthermore, many products out there need to get their kinks worked out in that first year, and i'd rather not be used as a tester.

as an example, right now you can buy a new (leftover) 2010 car with 5 miles on the odometer that is 99% identical to a 2011 model, but instead of paying $30,000 for the 2011, you can pay $25,000 because it's last year's model. sure, you might be missing out on 8 horsepower, heated mirrors, and some subtle design changes to the body, but it's basically the same car.

i have an R1. i will hold onto it as long as the darn hinges last, then get them replaced, and then take a look at the R3 after it has been out for a little bit (and after it has proven itself as a worthy upgrade). in the meantime, i'll continue to visit this forum and hopefully see some positive reviews coming from the rest of you guys who drop $1,200 on the R3. :) then in 2012, i'll buy one for 30-40% less than what you paid. :)

They just havn't stopped selling the i7, they basically have halted the ability to customize your M11x-r2 at all (USA).

    No RAM upgrades - 4GB.
    No HDD upgrades - 250GB 7200rpm.
    Bluetooth - comes standard.

Its odd since all the options (besides processor) as available for the R1 just not the R2.

I'd probably chalk it up to bad communication between the web team and the sales/development team more than a M11 refresh on the horizon.

And the i5 now ships in 24 hours... must be only preconfigured models in stock. Production shutdown for the new lid (hinge) is my guess. Not sure I'd bet on any super upgrades.

It is indeed a bit strange to see the very limited customization options. Not sure what to make out of it. But I have seen one reseller removing models or not restocking M11x or M15x. If we are very lucky, Dell is trying to empty their stock of parts and is preparing for new revisions.

Looks like there's no more r1-choice on the site now. Only the i7 model.

On Dell EPP I see R1 and R2 i7 available. On regular Dell I see all three models. But i5 still shows that it ships in 24 hours, whatever that means.
