Is it possible to do this?

Is there a way for the laptop to detect when there is no network cable plugged in to enable wifi and to disable wifi as soon as you plug in a network cable?

With either an alienware software config, windows 7 or hardware?

Yes. It's a setting in the Dell 1520 driver. Advanced tab > Disable Upon Wired Connect.
