Does anyone actually know the real reason why the M11x series got discontinued?

Was it because the demand was too low? or was it just because Alienware couldn't afford to or were incapable of upgrading the little beast any further?

I don't believe a real reason was ever stated. All I heard was the whole 'it will be sorely missed' comment and here's the alternative.. M14x.

Were I believe there was a lack of next-gen processors with ULV profile as well as low-tdp graphics. Seen how many of M11x's actullaly have cooling/performance problems, it's not a surprise they quit from producing it. Sub-12" and high power don't go together...

If there is any chance then Haswell very well might bring it back. Then there is the GPU, with a die shrink of Kelper, a lower powered GPU just might be the answer.
Currently using the M11x R2, I have found this surprisingly good on thermals.
There maybe a chance, but I guess no one will ever know, and will be just speculation. Also must consider what the market dictates as well, if it is feasible to have the form factor.
From the past the M11x and the M15x, both disappeared over time to make way for the M14x and the M18x. It appears to me Dell wants to keep the model amount at 3 to choose from.
Although with the rise of the ultra-book being somewhat popular, competition maybe tight, but then there is still a place to make an offering.
These are just my views and observations.

I always thought it should have been 12.1" IPS panel with a matte finish option in the exact same chassis size with a tweaked non-rectangular keyboard (arrow keys pulled down) and a tweaked, larger, push-to-click, multi-touch touch pad (large using all the space right up to the keyboard). There is a big enough bezel to do 12.1" without increasing the size one bit.

Any bigger screen/chassis and it would not fit in my motorcycle tank bag, which was precisely why I got the thing. I know my needs aren't the same as others, but a 13.3" notebook is a full-sized notebook IMO, which would lose the spirit/character of this thing.

The M14x is cool, but there's no way I'd ever own it. At that size, I can get any number of decent laptops. At the 11.6" to 12.1" class there's pretty much just the 11.6" MacBook Air, so why not take advantage of the wiggle-room between it and 13.3" just to show it up in one additional point of comparison?! ;)

In short: We need an M12x.

    1. screen, for this chassis it should have been at least 12.1 and IPS LED high quality
    2. no optical drive was a big no for many people
    3. it needed more powerful CPUs and GPUs

An M12x coupled with a GT650M would be rather nice as I am quite unimpressed with AW's current underpowered lineup. The M14x line should be discontinued in favour of reintroducing the M15x complete with a veritable selection of top-end GPUs (GTX660M-GTX680M) and the M18x should be shelved with, let's say, the M17x R5 SLI in its place.

I talked with a Dell Rep a few weeks ago who said it got discontinued for a number of reasons, but mainly the fact that you can only fit so much power into 11 inches without compromising the portability. He hinted at it coming back with a new intel platform, but who knows when that will happen.

There is a thread on ideastorm.com about the possibility of getting the m11x back. If you add your votes there it might be of help to get the little beast back.
It is currently under review by our team. Here is the link!
