    Hello,

I have a M11X R2 and it didn't have hinge problems for the first couple of months but now I notice more and more problems. I am noticing now that once I close the lid there is a gap of about 0.5 cm on one side. When I close and open the screen it makes some noise like the plastic is touching somewhere.

Also yesterday I noticed that my screen is loose. This happens when I open the screen and have it at about 90 degrees. In that position the screen can move back and forward about 3-4cm with no resistance.

I could leave with the screen gap but the screen moving back and forward when I carry the laptop around is really annoying.

Anyone seen this problems? I am wondering if this qualifies for a hinge replacement?

    Thanks for the help.

That does indeed sound like a classic description of the venerable M11x Hinge problem. Time to call Dell support I think. Sorry dude.

After a solid 8 months of problem-free euphoria on my R2, I've noticed the exact same thing on my machine just a few days ago. A slight grinding noise when opening the lid, and 3-4cm of give in certain open positions.

I bought my R2 last month, and i am fully aware of the famous hinge problem that you guys have experienced.

My R2 is brand new and when i first unboxed and lifted the screen up i noticed there is a wider gap on right side than of the left, the gap i am referring to is the gap between the screen edge to the laptop.

Could this gap be the start of an inevitable hinge problem?

screen touching keyboard is not a hinge problem. that's something different altogether, and many m11x's suffer from it (including mine). chalk it up to design flaw #67.

You can call and complain to AW, in which case they might replace the screen/hinge. But in all likelihood, you'll discover that the replacement does the same thing. The problem is that the keyboard on the left side is slightly raised resulting in contact with the screen. Some keyboards are raised more than others, and some people here have posted solutions to this problem (by taking apart the machine and modifying something underneath the keys - worth searching for the relevant thread if you can be bothered).

You might as well just get the hinge replacement done. I just had mine done today. I didn't even give a reason that i wanted the replacement and when the tech asked me why i was getting it replaced i said that the old hinge was shaking (which it was).
