My M11x often hard-locks when it's bumped leaving me stuck looking at whatever was on the screen. I usually find it that way when I close the lid and flip it over (keeps the vents clear if I need to walk away for a few minutes and leave it downloading or playing something). It has also happened when I have set a glass down and bumped the side or when my little dog clamors over my lap. It seems that it can happen no matter what I am doing, though it's hard to get it to happen on purpose.
Dell/Alienware insists that it is caused by the accelerometer/drop sensor included with the Hitachi HDD. They even uninstalled the utility leaving "Unknown Device" in my Device Manager as if they don't want me using it. The thing is, I *DO* want to use the sensor and I specifically buy Hitachi HDDs with it. I don't think that's the problem because I can launch the utility and watch it engage the sensor without issue when I hold and lower the notebook and it has never locked when I simply moved it (only a slight bump).
I'd like to know if anyone else has this problem and whether or not that have the Hitachi HDD + utility. The Control Panel utility is even customized by Alienware and yet they take it off when they get their hands on your PC!![]()
If it isn't obvious, I set my lid sensor switch to "do nothing." I also set my power button to "Sleep." If I manually tell it to sleep and then I close the lid before it finishes, it will trigger a distinctly different kind of hard lock (black screen, high fan, AlienFX stuck on). Obviously, it isn't "doing nothing" in that case. Can anyone else duplicate this?
Does your M11xR1 sometimes lock up when bumped? Got a Hitachi drive with accelerometer/drop sensor?
