Tonight while djing i thought a usb mixer cable was unplugged and tugged it, only to seconds later see my laptop coming crashing down from my table and metal laptop stand... I try to catch it, only to have it bounce back off the corner of the stand... leaving 2 marks on the laptop. 1 came out, and 1 didn't.

With over 2 grand into this laptop, I'm fuming right now... Please someone help. Scratched plastic cover over LCD screen... thank god didn't break screen.

Deep scratch. First time I've ever liked the normally reflective and glare screen on the m11x... saved my LCD! Is that plastic screen replaceable? Under any warranties?

ask for a hinge replacement :)

which involves taking the entire display away so you kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

So a hinge replacement will replace the plastic screen cover as well? I'm not really screwing over anyone either, my hinge was squeaking on some situations... now very squeaky with drop.

Also is this covered under my warranty?

yes, the hinge takes away the entire screen including the plastic front where your deep scratch is and so you kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I wonder if they will still replace it.

They could just say the damage taken from the screen could cause the hinges?

Maybe Dell might try and rob you?

    Hope not!

a lot of the time the dell techs are sub contracted and dont ask very many questions, they do the job and leave. (at least in my case)

I think you will be fine, they told me that I couldnt have my screen replaced until damage had occured on my laptop. If you can somehow take some pics that show the hinge is loose they will send the 3rd party contractor out and he probably wont ask any questions. Good Luck!!

Not to mention the screen scratch could have resulted from an event that took place "after" you were set up for a screen replacement ;)

i.e. Dell acknowledges the hinges on the M11x are a known design flaw and since they wouldn't be able to prove which came first the horse or the cart they would still be required to fullfill the hinge replacement, which lucky for you would solve your scratch issue.

This isn't as bad as it seems. The hinge replacement is the priority here. Call Dell and simply tell them about the hinge and ask for it to be replaced. Mention nothing of the screen at all. Being it is not cracked, there is nothing to worry about.

While I don't make much use of it now, I am a Dell certified tech. To give you an idea, the last system I was certified to repair (took the test for) was the XPS Gen 1 Laptop.

Most of the techs get paid per job they complete, some get paid per hour. Either way, they aren't interested in why the repair is happening, only that its going to be something relatively easy.

i would go with hinge replacement unless the tech they send is a real you should be ok... and as peole have mentioned its a known flaw so they would likely have to replace it eventually anyway

If you have total accident coverage then it will be covered. I asked TWO reps when purchasing/extending my warranty if the protection covered dropping the laptop, they assured me that it was.

I hope you got accident recovery :) If not, like you said, just feel lucy that the entire screen didn't break.

The good thing is you can actually wait until some accident actually happens, then buy the coverage and like I said before, return it. Works like a charm.

Dell does advertising fraud all the time. An eye for an eye :D

The cost is variable depending on how many years you want the service and even if your system warranty does expire you still can get it under warranty but you have to pay a recertification fee. Of course all this isn't cheap. I'd say accidental plans range from $150-400 from 1-4 years... and if your plan is already expired a re-certification fee I would be guessing at saying ~$100

Because that argument regularly does well in court.

I pay about $9/month with an independent insurer. Laptop insurance is worth shopping around for.

As for the OP, your best chance of getting that screen replaced is doing the hinge replacement at the same time. Personally, I wouldn't recommend fraud, as it could at best land you a fine, and at worst jail time. ;)

I would call dell and ask who in your area is certified to work on your computer. Then I would call the repair shops and ask if they have any bezel's. Who knows Dell might just have these guys just throw the broken screens away. Since all you need is the bezel you might get it for a few dollars.

or you could just keep opening and closing your screen till it actually breaks
