Finally bit the bullet and ordered this beast. I remember when I ordered my first gen m15x , and posted on these forums, this is a total flashback! Everything I hated about that alienware has improved with this baby. Epic small form factor, much better design, alien fx standard, and the best part is this cost less than 1/3rd of my m15x! I wanted to come back to alienware because I had a problem with my old computer and they went above and beyond the Call of Duty (TM). I am super excited. I don't spend money on luxuries like this (poor college student) but I went into my savings account for this, I felt it was better than financing. You guys don't understand I was going back and forth in my mind, my loyalty to apple, my love of alienware's recent move foward in the industry. Sure I am disappointed about not being able to run OSX. But with this computers style, it makes the macbook pro's look a bit boring I must say. I had to desert apple on this one, I mean look at these specs, better GPU (right?) than the 17" $2300 macbook pro. Whats in store for me, do I abandon my iMac all together? Dare I keep two computers? I must wait till my 5/13 ship date to find out. I must praise dells change from $75 standard shipping on alienware to $16 next day!!!!! I don't game much anymore (40 game collection mostly old school stuff and the best new titles) but I must be well prepared for the fall gaming season, Mafia 2, and of course fallout vegas and portal 2. Ok I am totally sounding like a geek.
I leave you with my ultimate nerdplate, guarantees the guy who steals my laptop gets a good laugh at my expense:

Now to stay up through the night and read the absurd never ending pages m11x posts and preparation/optimization threads.
EDIT: I got the $100 off thingy, which was awesome with the cheap shipping. Only upgrades I got were 250gb + 4 gigs

Ya, my M11x purchase was total impulse buy. I could not resist the coupon stacking savings during preorder.
Having said that, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. I personally would not have it as my main/only computer because of screen size for the most part but I got this laptop mainly because of its small form factor on the go. So the small screen is also a plus. -
Congrats Lethal,
Having just ordered and received the m15x this week (took two weeks from calling in the order to getting it), I understand your excitement. I'm reading all the threads though for a future purchase of an m11x. My wife really likes my m15x but I ain't sharing it with her. For what she wants to do, the m11x would be so much better as she is more of a netbook type user, but even surfing the net on a netbook is painfull, so this one would be a good step up for her for a bit more $$.
Hope it all works out good for you! -

Guys should I have gotten the core 2 duo cpu? I can't believe it I thought they were both core 2, and the only difference was the cache
I want the best possible performance but I hate spending another $100
EDIT: Called Dell asking to change the order, he said he could not, already in production, I told him about the best buy price and he said there would be no ability to add any more discounts to my purchase. So Basically I can either cancel it within the next hour or so and reorder (a) it correctly or (b) cancel and buy it at best buy, (c) leave it as is? if I cancel I must wait 2 bussiness days to see the money back on my debit card. So that would prolong the waiting further.

From what i've read the base processor doesn't really detract from the performance of the system as much as people originally imagined. So you should be fine. However (someone correct me if i'm wrong) I believe the upgraded ULV processor allows for some built in overclocking. Which might help with everyday processor intensive tasks.

Alright after searching through the forums I am bit calmer. I have realized that the two processors are very closely matched, and the pentium is indeed a dual core, just "ghetto" dual though. According to dell's site, the are both overclockable. Although I have not researched the real world feasibility of this yet. Im not going with best buy, because after taxes I would be paying the same thing and I prefer ordering direct. I feel compelled to order the core 2 just for the name. I know I probably will never see a difference, but I am OCD about things like this so I might cancel and reorder with dell.

Yeah, unless you care about virtualization or maybe 1-3 extra fps for $100, it's a waste of an upgrade.

...but, don't let that detract you. I LOVE my M11x. -

Thanks for the last minute reassurance guys, I am going to stick with the "pentium".

Do you work for Dell
-
Congrats Man! Enjoy the m11x! It's a beast!!!

You should get drunk more often!
You'll see, this is a pretty sweet little laptop.
P.S. Yeah, can't wait for Fallout Las Vegas! -
I'm also curious about battery life of the two processors. All of the reports I've seen with people talking about 7-8hr battery life have been with the SU4100. Would be interesting to benchmark the two on otherwise same spec'd systems. -
Ya, I originally got the SU7300 for the virtualization aspect but I ordered my laptop with Home Premium. I did order a Intel x25-m 160GB which should be arriving Friday, so I'll prob install Pro or Ultimate then.
The supposed miniscule boost in FPS from the extra cache on the CPU also is welcome since everthing is soldered in and non-replaceable/non-exchangeable. -

I have the su4100 still not missing the 1-3 fps or the $100.

congrats man on the purchase and many people claim the i7 is not worth teh $100 upgrade and i would like to argue that fact and before i start let me throw on my flaming suit so you guys down burn me down.
I picked up the i7 due to what many said the cpu is soldered on and not replaceable and the whole motherboard would have to be swapped out. I flip laptops alot (resell) and i want to make sure it is the easiest to resell and the i7 helps bring more attention and more buyers are interested even the i5 guys.
The i7 will give you a performance boost in daily tasks like multitasking, rendering, encoding... and other cpu intensive tasks you will see some fps gain maybe like 2-4fps on games that are already optimized and then you will probably see like 4-8 fps gain on games that are newer and cpu bottleneck or just a horrible port this is a guestimate according to other benchmarks. The price of the upgrade can vary according to your epp discount and you calling in to haggle. Tell them it sucks the m15x and m17x you can swap out processor but on m11x it is soldered and you really do not have the $150 or what ever to do the upgrade...tell them you are poor college kid and they will have sympathy on you. I got a killer deal on my system and only paid $810 with the i7 or $720 with the i5 and for me the $90 upgrade is worth it in the long run. -
