Hi there, I'm planning on buying an external USB powered DVD RW drive for my m11x i7 R2 that should arrive soon. Any recommendations from those that are using one with the m11x?
    thanks in advance.

This thread has been posted a couple times, and the consensus has been to look on Amazon.

    Here's a bit of a different question.

Do I really need one? Can't imagine I'd be sitting at a coffee shop or something and suddenly need to burn a CD or install a program.

In theory, at home, I should be able to browse to a drive on another computer in my network, or any network that I am in with appropriate permissions, and install from that source to the m11x, right? It'll take a little longer but that's not important.

If so then I'll just pass on getting another gadget.

You wont need one.. just buy each movie you want to watch off of Itunes for 9.99-29.99 each. Also be sure to re-purchase any of your old games on STEAM.

^ iTunes is ridiculous when it comes to price and quality of movie. If you're like me and use Netflix, you may find need at some time to play movies on your lappy. I like using my own version of 'time-shifting' by ripping a dvd to an .mkv file then deleting it after watching.

Thisguyrightthere has it right. Also, remember that it's easy to make an .iso from any spinning media and share it over the network or throw it on a thumbdrive (formatted exfat for larger files) then just mount it with your emulator of choice. (I've always been a fan of Daemon-tools).

Personally, I'm trying to decide if I'd use the $150 portable blu-ray drive here. But really, if I needed one, I'd just grab the cheapest one with decent reviews from an online retailer.

    -Cheers!

I am also using the Samsung Slim External DVD Writer SE-S084.

I would highly recomend it but I think I will buy games and movies from Steam and iTunes in the future just so I won't have to lug the DVD Writer around with me.

It works really well for all the games and movies I already own on hard copy.

In windows, go to my computer, go to your cd / dvd drive, right click, go to sharing and security, enable "Share this drive", pick the name, voila.

To access what is on the dvd drive, go to your M11x, go to start -> run, type \\NAMEOFCOMPUTER\nameofdrive, hit enter.

If you have a space in your computer name or drive name, then put quotes around it ... "\\NAME OF COMPUTER\name of drive"

Disable windows firewall on the computer hosting the drive if you can't get got to it initially (or other firewalls).

    EDIT:

In windows 7, I believe you don't have a "Run", its just your search box.

    EDIT EDIT:

To make this even better, if you are able to access the drive, go back to your search box, type CMD and hit enter. A black window will open. Then type:

    net use x: "\\name of computer\name of drive" /persistent:yes

Replace X: with desired drive letter. This will make it look for it every time you start your M11x up and assign it x: in my computer.

Im using the Asus SDRW-08D1S-U (You can find it on bestbuy, target, and walmart) and it cost 60-70 $ . It works great, but its a liltle noisy when its working. Anyways I almost never use it... Only to listen to music from a CD

I am always image discs I want to use including games and apps. Imgburn is the app that will create ISO out of discs. Then I move the images to a usb key or the actual hard drive of the alienware. Then mount the ISO with VirtualCloneDrive. I really don't think anyone needs an external CDROM...just have to think outside the box.

For those of you looking for a slim drive that goes with your Soft Touch finish, there's the Lenovo 40Y8686 CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. It's a pretty close match in color, although not exact. The R2 is a truer black. I found one of these, unused at my office. Comes with a small black nylon case, USB cable and a power adapter. Seems to work fine without the adapter though. Just installed Dragon Age on my system with no problems.

EDIT: Will have to find some sort of sticker to cover up that Lenovo logo though.

    EDIT2: Like this one... [IMG]
