Dell would have to move their manufacturing facilities over to Terminus to achieve this on the M17x... :D

Seriously, I think the other poster was talking about the M11x

Ive read lots of reviews on the m11x saying that they got 5-7 hours of browsing time with low brightness.

I got 5hrs 25mins of watching HD (720p) video on IGP with screen brightness on 2 bars above min. So yeah, entirely possible.

Optimus uses applicaion profiles to control when it swaps the GPU. You can create your own to your liking. Does Adobe Flash 10.1 have acceleration under the Intel GMA HD? You might be better of using the GPU acceleration on the GeForce 335M instead of hitting the CPU.

So I guess by "new" m11x the rep meant the one that's been out for a few months. Got my hopes up that they would announce the specs today :(

Forget the about the performance of the I chip compared to the su4100, the dirffrence will be small in any case. The screen is where the most noticeable improvement will be.

just want one same type just brighter maybe RGB?

I just got multi-zoned keyboard on m17x. Pretty pointless as it is, unless you're like 5 years old. :p

It'd be nice if you could change the colors of WASD or cursor keys or dunno numbers or something... anything that makes it logical. Just having rainbows on the keyboard.... eh... not my cup of tea. :)

Some things I want revised (outside of the obvious):

A better screen. Really. While we're on the subject, an actual glass screen would be nice.

Less flimsy hinges. Its pretty easy for the hinges to bend/break over time and start creaking like hounds from hell.

A metal chiclet keyboard like what the Dell Adamo has. Also a touch sensitive for audio controls, etc strip like all the other Alienware laptops have. There's no reason why the M11x shouldn't have a touch sensitive strip.

I wish that the recovery disk came on an SD card considering the M11x has no optical drive. If HP can do it with their ENVY lineup, Dell should be able to do so with the M11x.

The performance increase should be noticeable.

Intel states that the i5-430UM beats the old SU7300 by about 30% in PCMark Vantage.

    Let's imagine an M11x with a Core i7-660UM ;-)

That's probably an SU7300 at the stock 1.3GHz, however. Granted, if you get similar overclocking for the Core i5 ULV as ASUS have done then the i5 will retain this advantage.

Nonetheless, it's a pity that Dell hasn't gone to the effort that Acer and Apple have in order to get ULV-class battery life with non-ULV CPUs.

Out of your list, the MacBook Pro's GPU is just too underpowered and overpriced. The Sony Vaio Z11 is also way overpriced. The acer comes with an i3 and HD 5470 which is underpowered compared with the M11x altogether.

The other two don't exist yet, so we'll have to see, and I wouldn't consider the UL30 a competitor because it only comes with GT 310m.

I think the N82 and HP Envy 14 are really your best contenders, but they're also 14" notebooks. We'll have to see dimensions and weight to really see how much of a difference there is.

Ah, I didn't realize the Envy 14 would be that expensive. Although if you can get the Bing 25% cashack, it might make it a contender. :D

The N82 does look nice, as it comes with a full mobile i3/i5/i7 instead of ULV. Then again it is a 14" notebook. Yes, the M11x is definitely big and heavy for a 12" but I still think the N82 will weigh at least 6 lbs and be significantly bigger.

In New Zealand we have the 13.1" HP Envy 13-1000 Notebook.
At NZD4499, it's twice the price of the M11x at NZD1999.
Envy does look good on paper, but the price!!!

It's really only a contender at the US price point, from what I hear everyone else pays a large premium on it.

In USA, right now with $100 off M11x you can get base model for $699 and $799 if you want 4GB and a 250GB hard drive. SU7300 is still a $100 price premium, but if you added that it'd cost as much as the Best Buy version. Only advantage really of going through Dell is you get Dell's warranty, and a customized name plate.

Either way, my guess is the i5 version of the M11x will most likely start at $899, if not more, with 2GB RAM and 160GB 5400RPM HDD.

well i was talking about the US prices.

the Envy 15 comes in at $1299
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-430M (2.26GHz, 3MB L2 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.53GHz
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5830 Graphics

the Envy 17 comes in at $1399
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-430M (2.26GHz, 3MB L2 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.53GHz
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5850 Graphics

the Envy 13 comes in at $1499
    • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo SL9300 (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache)
    • 3GB DDR3 System Memory (1 Dimm)
    • 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 4330 Graphics

the Sony Viao Z starts at $1800
    • Intel® Core™ i5-540M processor (2.53GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz
    • 4GB (4GBx1) DDR3-SDRAM-1066
    • 128GB (128GBx1) Solid State Drive with RAID 0 Technology
    • 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M GPU

so my overall conclusion is that the sony viao Z at base price is 300 dollars more expensive than the envy 13 at base price but your getting a better processor, more ram, a solid state hdd instead of a 7200rpm one, and a 1gb graphics card over a 512MB graphics card. tell me if my logic is wrong but i think the sony viao Z is a better deal.

Well the Envy that everyone is comparing the m11x to is the Envy 14 which comes out with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, non ULV core i3/5/7, and has a starting price of $999.

Lets leave comparisons (performance, price, etc.) out of the thread. If you want to compare different manufacturers/models, do so here:

The video that was released clearly shows the same looking m11x (size and case) as what we have now. Is there any way we can get the refresh facts as they are released in a sticky or something?

    Thanks,

I'd use my i7 M11x to cook bacon and eggs on a cold winter morn. And when I'm finished with that, I'll use it as a space heater for my entire house.

Don't bother with the refresh, if it even comes. Without a significant upgrade to a whole new cooling system (in which they'd have to change the design), it'll burn.

I've heard plenty of good things about the M11x's cooling, so that doesn't seem likely to me. Besides, the cooling system doesn't change the heat output of the system, and the M11x still consumes a lot less power than any high-end gaming laptop, so picking an M11x as a heater when the M17x will give you far more heating power (probably more per dollar too) is silly.

Sure, the M11x has amazing cooling. But that's because it's running a Pentium or Core 2 processor. If you were to up that to an i7, that'd be a monstrous heat output. I'm skeptical that the little monster could handle it.

It more or less is a 13" form factor, just has an 11.6" screen. But I agree, it should have at least a 12.1" if not 13.3" screen, both of which would fit within the bezel dimensions as it is today.

What are you talking about? A ulv Core i7 uses around the same amount of power as the Pentium/C2D. With this upgrade, the M11x will see no heat increase.

i am planning to customize a 12.1inch LCD to my m11x...

just finalizing the parts. just have it brought to a laptop repairs shop and they sell 12.1 inch lcd and we are just looking if this would fit in the lcd bezel of the m11x

What's the point of getting two high speed SSDs in Raid 0 to go down a single SATA II (3Gb/s) line? The SATA II is going to bottleneck the Raid 0, right?

Also with that RAID device, I'm assuming it's the same as a Convoy XL (just different branding) which according to this cannot be used as a boot device.

13 inch will fit if it were designed differently. I was just saying that it would fit within the current dimensions

    ........................................

The M11x is barely able to keep up with a single SSD.. the bottleneck is NOT in the disk drive.

This is a completely and utterly useless mod.
