Hi there,
I know many of you want like this but I would like to dual boot Windows XP and Windows 7 on the M11x. I just bought a M11x R1 from the outlet. It is not here yet. I can't just use Virtual XP as I need 3D support and I need this for my work. Is this even possible? Anyone tried it yet?
I'm willing to buy you Call of Duty®: Black Ops on Steam if you can help me install Windows XP on M11x! Infact any game you want as long as it's not more than $60!
I have the standard M11x R1 spec with SU7300. It would be really great if I can work on this laptop and not just play! Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you

Hmm this is a good question can you just partition the hard drive into (2) different partitions install XP on one and Win 7 on the other?

I don't see why not. You can even use the Disk Management utility from within Win7 to resize the current partition and create a new one. Open the Windows 7 Start Menu, type "Disk Management". Select your system partition, right-click and select Resize. Shrink it by whatever amount you want available for Windows XP. You don't even need to create a new partition - just leave empty space on the drive. Then plug in an external CD drive, boot off the Windows XP disc, and tell it to use the unformatted space.
The BOOTMGR and NTLDR bootloaders should be able to negotiate with each other and give you a prompt to boot either OS at boot time.
Pretty straight forward. Good luck! -
Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP - Windows 7 Forums
here you go i suppose -
I think the question is for drivers and not how to do a dual boot install. You might be able to do the partition and get the install going but without any of the drivers, you won't be able to use your laptop. Dell doesn't provide drivers for XP as far as I know. I'm not even sure if there is support for XP in the M11x Bios and so you might encounter endless Blue screens when you try to install.

If you can find XP drivers for all the components (if all you want is to get it to boot, the chipset drivers will probably be sufficient), then what you can do is create a custom XP boot CD with nLite. Pre-integrate all the service packs and the drivers you find, configure it to install unattended, burn, insert, boot, go make coffee, done.

The biggest issue you would most likely have is the chipset drivers for xp. The rest of the drivers would most likely be fine, and all it would take would be a stripped xp install to prevent any problems with the hardware and xp. The dual boot win7/xp is not problem at all I have had a few computer dual booted with that exact setup. I'll see if I can find the drivers and if I can I will post those along with a guide on the dual boot part.

Yeah switchable graphics is gonna be a no go unless you find a genius to write a custom package for you, if you had an R2 you'd have no problem as each driver is a seperate package for the GPU's.

Thanks for the reply guys!
DaneGRClose, It is as rehangohar77 said, you deserve a good Samaritan award! My laptop is set to arrive on the 7th. This will be the first thing I would be doing! I'm already downloading the drivers! I won't be needing switchable graphics as I can use Windows 7 for that. I already have an nlited XP disc. If the guide doesn't work, I will rebuild it with M11x drivers! I really want to like this laptop and keep it and with members like you in the community, I already feel like a happy owner!

If anyone would like the guide PM me, I'll be more than happy to share it along with all of the links if someone wants it. I don't have a problem with helping for free as I've shown that time and time again, but when someone makes an offer I expect them to follow through with that offer. Certain people in this post have shown no intentions of doing so.

yutsmail should be banned from this site for not following through.. just saying.

Maybe he's waiting to make sure the dual booting works first. Come on, give the guy a break, his laptop isn't even due to be delivered until today.
-
And while I suggest he try these tips right away, reality is he will need some hours to config and setup how he wants before all this.

Going to close this thread - take it to PM guys. In the end remember, we all come here for help when we cant resolve items on our own. If everyone started with 'what are you going to do for me if I help you?' this forum would go south very fast.
As to the subject of the OP's offer to purchase a game for assistance - well OP, thats on you. BTW, you'd be amazed at how much info is on the forum. Using the search this forum feature can produce quite a few results.
Free Call of Duty: Black Ops if you can help me install XP on M11x!!
