So, had an interesting night last night. I was anxiously installing my 3rd internal antenna for the Bigfoot Killer-N 1103 I just purchased and I finalized the process by almost burning down my whole house!

What happened was that after removing the palm rest and getting the antenna wire situated to my liking, I must have moved the ribbon cable on the top-left connecting the power button circuit board to the chassis (directly above the top-left fan) to where it touched the fan cables and it shorted. I can see the ribbon cable burned about 1/4 of an inch on the left side, making my laptop not even show a flicker of hope. The fan cables lost some rubber coating but seems to still be functional (I guess I'll find out after I replace the ribbon cable).

Anyways, I ordered this ribbon cable from eBay:

    HP DV6000 KOTL E220709 AWM 20798 80C 60V RIBBON CABLE | eBay

That should work right? Also, any possibility the motherboard or something vital went bye bye or such shorts tend to be isolated?!

Sorry but even as an ex-pro [technician]. Always always unplug the powersource while assembly/disassembly. But I can occasionally remember applying power when already diassembled (although very carefully).

LOL! Well, that's the thing. I plugged my battery back in as I wanted to make sure everything was working before screwing all the screws (these screws have a tendency to easily strip). I was verifying all the cables were secure and continuously pressed the power button to see if it would come on, and nothing. I then found the loose ribbon cable and attached it and voila, the lights came on. But so did the smoke! =/

Yep - hope the smoke didn't fry something on the mobo - I just swapped out my mobo on my R1 last weekend am always now triple checking connections. At least parts seem reasonably priced now.

Once the smoke comes out you can't put it back in.

Hi, I'm experiencing the exact same issue. Did that ribbon cable fit/work? gonna do the same if so. If it's possible, would you be able to email with your response?

    [email protected] thanks!
