I should be getting my M11x R3 tomorrow but was curious on how this optimus switching works. If I want to play a game using the dedicated card, I should add to a whitelist, correct? What if I want to play older games or less graphically intense games using the hd3000 IGP? Do I just leave those games off the whitelist?
-
You use the integrated option instead. Whitelist just ensures that the dedicated card uses them. Optimus may automatically choose to use the Nvidia card even if you do not make sure its whitelisted.
-
Okay, so I will have an option to just use integrated? If so, that will work. I guess it will make more sense after I play around with my system.
-
Yeah. The whitelist is mainly for games you want to force onto one or the other graphics card. Sometimes Nvidia gets it wrong.
It's pretty straight forward. Good luck, enjoy.
-
Don't worry about Optimus, it is actually really good.
I've never had a single problem with it the whole time that I've had my R2 and most people haven't either. It may seem like a few people have had troubles here on NBR but for the majority that you don't hear from, Optimus has been working fine. -
This is true. But most games run on Nvidia and like you wanted on IGP you will need to force it upon it.
-
Oh whoops, I missed that in the OP. I have never actually gamed on the IGP on purpose
Does the R3 perform very well gaming on the IGP? -
Most times you won't have to worry. Old games won't be able to utilize the newer card. Starcraft 1 for example, will not even give you the option to use the nvidia. Same with Diablo 2, and a few other older games.
All you need to do is go into your nVidia control panel and set the preferred card to the nVidia card and optimus will do the rest. If you load up your favorite game and you see you're getting 10 FPS, exit out, go to the control panel and add the game's .exe to the whitelist. Restart the game, and your problem should be solved.
That kinda scenario happened a lot for me back with earlier drivers, but it seems that with the newer nvidia drivers this problem has been reduced quite a bit. I don't remember the last time a game tried to run using the intel graphics accelerator. It's not really an issue anymore.
Anyway I hope you enjoy your M11x, it really is a sweet laptop. You won't be disappointed, especially with the R3. -
Some games that are two or three years old perform great. Source games for instance... (with the updated engine)
-
The IGP is actually pretty good, and plays without the fans kicking in.
Rather than the hassle of white list etc, if you right click an icon to open it, there is a choice of the 2 graphics chips to run it with. -
Are you serious ?
I mean , i use to play sources game back in days ( Radeon 9600 Pro hello ... ) , but now we have computer that are WAY more powerfull , and games like TF2 still plays horrible on my R1 for exemple , on GT335 ! I can't even imagine on IGP ... -
I have good experiences on my R1 on TF2.
Except that I stink. -
The HD3000 is different from the R1 IGP....
its built on Sandy Bridge... -
You'll have to go into the control panel and tell it to use the IGP. I've done this for games like Doom, Limbo, some Source ones, web browsers, and I was even running WoW on it and getting 30fps steady with mostly good settings.
-
dude, its not all about the GPU. the processor is the bottleneck in the r1. even the intel igp it has can play older games fine. it doesnt always need the GT335.
R1 = GMA 4500MHD
r2 = Intel HD (not much better)
r3 = Intel HD 3000 (has ALOT more potential)
Games on IGP?
