I though I would make a quick post to let all the M11X owners know about the SC2 Digital Download edition announced by Blizzard today.
Digital Purchasing - Information - Battle.net
You can download the full 7 gig client today, and on release day you pay your money and can start playing right away, no disc drive required. I know I have seen several threads and people asking in SC2 discussions about how to get SC2 on the M11X for release day, and now we have our answer.
Personally I have been debating getting a $40 external disc drive just for SC2 over the past few weeks, now I can save my $40 and still play SC2 on release day.

Awesome post YodaGoneMad! I will very likely go this route too!
EDIT:
Although I may still purchase the hardcopy for the manuals, box etc., and just download the client but use the license key of the retail box to activate....hee.
Updated:
Is what I intend to do even possible?
"If you are planning to buy a boxed copy from a retail store, this is not for you! " as stated on the page.
Anyone know?
-
Wait...will this work like steam?
As in if I were to buy a digital copy, would I be allowed to put it on another? -
On the page they say if you are getting a boxed copy that this client is not for you. I don't know if that means it literally won't work with a store bought key, or you don't need it since you got the disc.
I would like to the have the box, manual, and disc also, I still have the boxes for my other Blizzard titles all the way back to Warcraft 2. (Lord that seems nerdy)
On the other hand, the box and stuff isn't worth getting an external drive for, so if this client won't work with a regular store bought key I will probably just get the digital edition. -
-
i was planning on doing that too. buy a box copy and download a digital copy when i register the key to my account hopefully it works
-
Ah ok, just wondering.
Cause I have never bought a blizzard game before so I am kinda new to the whole thing. When my system arrives, I need to download this client. -
I'm downloading it anyway, but I intend to use it with my storebought key so hopefully that works.
I like owning the media for my software. I know it's becoming more absurd since the media doesn't really mean anything and has to be activated online anyway, but I guess I'm starting to show my age. -
Hey, I'm only 14 years old and I like having hard copies of games as well.
Anyways, I sent blizzard an e-mail regarding this and I am awaiting their reply -

Thought I would update everyone, it has been confirmed by Blizzard that the DL client will work just fine for store bought keys. You just take your key from the store, enter it on Battle.net, and you can use the DL client to play.
The only thing to be aware of is the key will only work for your region. So if you live in Europe you need to download the Europe client, because a store bought Euro key will only work for the Euro client. -
-
. I was hoping this was possible.

Thanks for the update, downloading currently

How about Buying a retail key? and installing it via online.
Im sure the game wont need the CD to run off it operates like wow. Id rather not buy IT digitally due to the fact i get discounts from working at best buy. -
-
EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't see your second post. -
can i make an iso from my bought/boxed copy and install it that way on my pc?
-
-
i got word back from battle.net, once a retail box copy is registered to your account, you are able to download the client (for all games associated to your account) from the account management page, without the need for the original discs. This is a feature that all current blizzard games now have including WoW.
hope this helps for guys on both sides of the boat. -
you can also just pre download it, then go to gamestop opening day and get the game, add the cd key on your battle.net account and play from there, game launches are pretty fun to go to if you have never been to one
edit* what ^ he said -
Awesome, so buy the game, register on battle.net and download the game it is!
-
little off topic but just for sharing
Someone got StarCraft 2 early and made an unboxing video about it. -
that is one of the best C.E.s ever!!! Pity I can only afford the standard version...
-
Looks like I should be downloading mine: )
-
-
That dog tag looks dumb. lol
There are a bunch of unboxing vids on youtube for StarCraft. I guess the US has a later release than other countries. -
-
Just seems like that based on the unboxing videos.

Guys,
I have a friend who did not take the opportunity to download a digital copy of the game before it launched, but would like to be able to download the digital copy even though he plans to purchase the retail box version.
Will he still be able to download the digital version from the blizzard site without the need to purchase the digital copy and and activate it later using the retail box key like how so many of us did last week?
I do not seem to see the option to download a digital copy anymore without the requirement to purchase the digital version first. -
It would seem not mobilezila.
Looks like they now made it that you first have to enter in that registration key.
By the way, mobilezila, did you get a guest key in the retail box? I know blizzard has been putting guest keys in their boxes (which gives 7 hours of free playtime to another person). You could give that guest key to your friend, and he can download the game with the key and later activate the full game with the retail copy.
Tis a pity too, cause it took me (now I only pay 25 bucks a month of internet, so its kinda bad) roughly 24 hours to download it, spread between three days. Obviously people with awesome connections of awesome won't experience long download times, but the download is a huge 6.99 GB file.
On another note, I need to go out and buy myself a copy of SC2.
My guest key (friend of mine gave it to me) is running out. :/ -
You can download the client without a key no problem.
I downloaded my SC2 the night before the midnight release, that way when I got my collector's edition (yay) I just put in a key and started playing right away. -
Yes you can download the client w/o the key. It will ask you to log on to play though.
Getting Starcraft 2 on the M11X without a DVD drive.
