Hello all, I currently have a M11x R1 and recently bought a 120GB OCZ Vertex SATA 2 SSD to replace my 240GB HDD. What is the best way to transfer my OS/Data to my new SSD? Would using a Sata 2 to Usb work by saving a backup onto the SSD and then using it? My COA got rubbed off the bottom so installing windows again will cost me dearly :(

I also want to say thanks, there is a lot of helpful infomation here, the modding section is awesome!

    Select the free version

Fill in details and get 30 free days key, using the usb/sata connection should work :)

Failing that do u have a ext DVD burner, if so make a recovery disk.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    C.

Hmm I may just make the recovery disk and try that route, good idea.

As for the Sata 2 to usb wire, I see on ebay and other sites that they just say sata to usb, would those work for sata 2 drives as well?

    Thanks for your help!

I would see if any of your mates has a sata enclosure such as a Kingston SNA-DC/U which came with my old Kingston 128gb desktop upgrade kit. I guess that would be a safer route.

However try the backup first via Windows 7 recovery or AW own inbuilt software.

BTW don't have a m11x, mine still in the post :)

    Regards.

I once successfully did a Windows 7 Hard Drive Backup thing. It worked awesomely. I did have a problem but it was my fault. Just make sure you have a 3rd drive to store the backup.

If you made the Alienrespawn back up it is a doddle.

Make sure you use the USB 2.0 port after fitting the new SSD, power on, press F12, boot from USB stick jobs a good'un, connect old HDD and transfer you files.

Well I went a completely different route, I ended up buying a broken laptop that had a windows 7 home prem COA, so after installing it on my M9700 (my portable disc reader would not read my M11x home prem disc) I am now up and running on a fresh install :D

I will make some backups/respawns though, installing windows is such a pain on a M9700 that overheats for no reason....Thank you everyone for the help.
