FPS BENCHMARK OF BLACK OPS
This is a guide of how much FPS - or + a setting does.
This is my first guide on the whole interwebs so bare with me.
I'm using a M11X R1, it shouldn't really be a difference to the R2.
The game uses 20% of your GPU and usually 1.2GB and down RAM usage. The game uses a enhanced WaW engine, which was made from the CoD4 engine, which my R1 can run WaW and CoD4 at 27-157 (Yikes) FPS. This game trys to use the MW2 style of models and polygons. But the engine is so horribly optimized it stutters. Which this guide may help you to fix this nightmare.
HOW THE GUIDE WORKS
-FPS+ means thats how much FPS more you will get E.G 1-2 FPS+ means you will get 1 or 2 or in-between more FPS. FPS- means how much FPS will be taken away. If no effect of FPS then it will be 0-0 FPS+-. Sorry, but I'm not good at explaining. If anyone can put this in better words then your post will be put here and you will be credited.
SHADOWS
-Shadows can make a huge quality and feel of a game.
Turning Shadows off will give you 2-5 FPS+. So this is a MUST of turning off.
TEXTURES
-Textures are the skin of a thing. Like in a game high textures can make walls, grass and other things look so much better.
Turning off textures makes practically no difference whatsoever, but to be accurate, I got a 0-0.6 FPS+. You shouldn't really worry about this setting.
ANTI-ALIASING
-This setting removes the Stair-case effect that are on the edge of models/items.
This is actually pretty weird, most likely the effect of a horrible port. OFF gets me 0-4.6 FPS+, X2 gets me 0-0 FPS+-, X4 gets me 0-1 FPS-, X8 gets me 1-3 FPS-, and exclusively in multiplayer which was added by a patch, X16 which is a killer of FPS, gets me 4-9 FPS-. X2 is the best solution here.
BILINEAR OR TRILINEAR?
-This setting filters textures.
I currently have gotten no FPS improvement. But in performance, bilinear should be better in FPS boost. So 0-0 FPS+-.
SHADER WARMING
-This warms/slightly loads up textures.
This setting makes a Win-Loss situation. Turning it off boosts your FPS 3-5, but causes EPIC stuttering when coming to areas that really aren't loaded or you haven't been there. Turning it on is like V-Sync. Less stuttering and less FPS, I got 4-7 with this setting turned on. So this is really up to you, I'd choose on so no freezing/stuttering will occur. So if you're a sniper then this is alright turned off, if you jump around with a crossbow and go Rambo, then this should be turned on, so no freezes will stop your domination.
ANISOTROPIC FILTERING\
-This setting improves the sharpness of textures.
Turning the bar fully down doesn't make any difference. 0-0 FPS-+, turning it up also gives the same effect. 0-0 FPS-+. So if you see textures blurry on your screen, or any other reason, turn the bar up, fully.
RESOLUTION
-This setting determines how many pixels your GPU produces for your monitor/screen.
This is the weirdest setting, turning it fully down to 800X600 gives you more stutter and FPS spikes, but constantly and stably gives you 29-36 FPS. Turning it to 1366x768 gives you 9-103 FPS. So putting the resolution lowers then 1366X768 and higher then 800X600 will give you the best FPS.
ADDITIONAL FPS+ TWEAKS
The new nVidia 270.51 Beta driver is a FPS+ for this game by giving the game a more stable FPS. YOU WILL LOSE THE HYBRID/SWITCHABLE CHIPSET OPTION ON A M11X R1! Don't bother OCing the GPU for this game, it causes horrible fragments and artifacts. After the temp of the M11X (while OC'ed GPU) gets over 60, the game locks down at 2FPS. This game is CPU independent. This isn't our M11X's fault its the game's engine's fault by poorly optimizing the game.
THE END
Thanks for looking at this guide! I did a lot of testing with the games in-game FPS counter, FRAPS and other programs that I used which the names of them I forgot. It took me 4 days to finish this. If you found any mistakes in this guide then please tell me as soon as possible. Treyarch does not care about PC gamers. They release a patch for us every 2-6 weeks. Xbox 360 gets patches like in a couple of days. I hope Treyarch will fix this issue, this guide is a substitute. And you can post this on other websites IF you give me credit and my Steam name. Thanks again for reading this guide !

+rep for the concise guide. Other threads have more in-depth stuff, but this saves a lot of time if the basic settings are all we wanna tweak. Thanks.
-
AlienOnions, check your PM.
-
And thanks for taking some time to look at my guide!
-
If anyones reading this thread anymore, theres also CFG tweaks. Their everywhere on the internet.
-
Aw, come on, no ones reading this anymore

also, a new patch 1.07 is QA on Tuesday. Mod tools are going to be released soon! Also, I recommend if anyone has twitter, follow PCDEV for Black Ops. Also, they said that enabling multithread to 1, creates a D3D flag, which is intended for debug. I will look in to this.
EDIT: Directly from PCDEV "r_multithreaded_device "1" creates a D3D (directx) device with the multithreaded flag. It is slower, intended for debug." -
Good guide! +rep

1.08 patch is out, not any help. Mod Tools are launching when the next Xbox 360 DLC is out (Just a bit after that)
I suggest you upgrade to the non beta 270 drivers.
-
i never got any artifacts while playing with my gpu overclocked.
im at 605/926/1520 -
Do you just upgrade off the Nvidia website selecting the 335M from the list and it will work on the M11X R2 with optimus?
This is my first game i'll be trying out today!
Thanks for the guide Rep+ -

I have my GPU overclocked as well and I don't see any artifacts either. Are you also OC'ing the CPU? Maybe it's getting too hot? My settings are pretty close to ajslay. Actually they were lower but I matched them to AJ's and I've had no problems.

@crazedny
you figured out my name? xD
did you do the voltage mod on the gpu? -
Everyone playing Black Ops, upgrade to the newest non-beta WHQL driver 270.61. You will get a few artifacts on old games.
-
Awesome guide. It helps to keep my temps down.

Thanks
And to anyone who is STILL reading, upgrade to the new nVidia GPU drivers, does not support Hybrid for R1 but it increases performance on Dual Core by 12%. -
Bookmarked. Thanks.

Anybody had a .CFG optimised for R1 ?
Anyway , i'm not sure i'll play this game ever again on my R1 , hope that MW3 will have MW2 engine and will be playable at native resolution -
I have a config, and it will improve FPS a little, but honestly, nothing much you can do. Even making the game look like a shoddy PS2 game doesn't help.
Infinity Ward makes their engines optimized, but don't bet on it. -
Very nice short guide, dont have to read through the pages long other guides about this now.
