I'm curious to try out Linux (ubuntu), has anyone tried it out on their M11X?

Just install it with Wubi. There's nothing to lose that way.
Download | Ubuntu -
I run it every day on an R2 with Virtual box. Given the virtualization extensions available in the core series of processors you really don't lose that much between running Linux this way and running it native. What you gain though is freedom from problems of driver configurations etc.
Just be sure to have enough memory free to dedicate to Virtual Box (4 gig is ideal) -
I have. it takes a bit to fix the video issue, right now the only way is to use acpi_call and kill it. I don't have it working with the nvidia card, but i did get it to push out about 4 hours of batter life give or take. Im running an m11xR2 with I7 and hdd on ubuntu 11.04 to give an idea of what kind of life you can expect. there is also a utility you can get that can control the frequency of the CPU, but it will not over clock. theres also a trick to move some temp files into ram so web browsing etc won't page the HDD as much. this saves some juice.
if your interested i can see if i can dig up where I got these tweaks. they where not at the same place unfortunately.
FYI
I installed it using a spare external HDD i had around. making a small fat32 partition, and following the instructions on a USB install on the official web sight. just click the option to show all drives and select the partition that was created on the external.
what did not work was a microSD card using a USB addapter, or using a pro duo card inside the build in card reader.
I installed this way because i lost my external card reader. -
Alienware M11X Thread - FedoraForum.org
Just read through this entire thread and comments.
Tells you how to disable nVidia GPU to save battery life.
Has anyone tried Ubunto on their M11X[R2]?
