Hi All - I have had my m11xr2 for 1.5 years, and now the fan has stopped working and my idle temps are exceeding 75 degrees Celsius (as in just browsing the net etc). the fan just doesnt turn on anymore.

My question: How do i get this fixed? Is through dell the best way?

I know most people would just order a fan, open the m11x up and do it themselves, i just have no idea how to do that, nor am i comfortable doing that. Just wanted some advice on how people have worked w dell (do technicians come to the house or what?).

    Thanks.

edit 1 clarifying: FYI am out of warranty. Everything runs fine (ie internet etc). Really would love to have any idea of a ballpark price to get this thing replaced and fixed. Everything else seems to be working fine.

Step 1: Did you shoot some compressed air through the vents? Make sure you stop the fan moving with a toothpick or some such so you don't mess up the ball bearings.

    Step 2: Check your warranty.

Step 3: Open up the back and make sure all the fan plugs are plugged in properly. Dell has the complete service manuals online. I'll find you a link if you need it.

Step 4: I'm sure someone will be along directly to tell you the best place to find a replacement fan.

    Out of warranty, unfortunately.

Any idea how much dell charges to send someone out to fix? I dont mind paying.

I got the same problem on my m11x r2 last week. I did the diagnostic test for the fan and got the 3700:b error. I was also out of warranty but when I called Dell, I got my fan replaced free of charge :)

err when i blew air and forgot to stop it (stupid i know) it was a bit twitching but not turning, so i just gave it a push with a needle to spin a little bit, working for well over a month without issues now.

When you boot your pc, press f12 then choose diag. It will run through various test for the m11x memory and cpu and then you can choose a fan diag.

Yeah, what he said. Give it a kick start as it may buy time while you sort it out.

I had this same issue with M11X R3 out of the box. Called Dell and tech came out to replace the fan and the system has worked fine ever since. I would call Dell if you're not comfortable doing it yourself.

    Thank you all!!

basically i extended my warranty -well worth the 200 bucks i think - and they are sending someone to my house this week to fix it.

My question to you all - any thing i need to 'worry' about with a technician? double/triple check before he leaves etc?

Thanks again - seriously, dell should pay these forums, super helpful.

Before they leave, just make sure the computer turns on and doesnt make any funny sounds. Also make sure he doesnt have any left over screws.

When they replace the fan/heat sink make sure they put new thermal paste in there and not just slap the heat sink onto the old paste.

you could get high spec paste while at it for the tech cause some use the crappy cheap one that don't do so well... Just a thought.

    boots up
    ports work
    batt charges
    keyboard flat
    wifi ok

In my case after a MB replacement I put it through a load test (heavy CPU/Mem). You might also consider this as you need to hear the fan spooling under load and confirm no heat related issues.

Ha! i went through this exact steps...seems to be working great.

after 5 hrs of star wars straight the pc is a cool 55 degrees.

MY only concern is when booting up, the bios is a different 'look' than the other one, but i actually can OC this new CPU much much higher.

All in all - took technician 20 minutes to take it apart, replace mobo, pc, gpu, fan, heatsync, etc. not bad at all.

    thanks again guys.

LAst parting note, i am very very impressed with Dell's service my timeline was very fast:

Monday: called dell, got warranty extension
Took 48 hrs to kick in
Wednesday: Called dell, they ordered new part
Thursday: Part arrived at technicians place, and he called me for appointment, came over, and fixed. Up and running by 2pm Thursday!

overall, once warranty kicked in it was less than 24 hrs for it to get fixed. Im amazed.

I got my mobo replaced as well except it was free of charge even if my warranty was expired :)
    Quite a nice surprise

I did not have any problems with my technician, but I have heard some bad stories so I could be the exception. I would agree with the previous poster though. Ensure that the fan is kicking on and do a quick spot check before they leave. The techs should have a vested interested in getting your computer to work contrary to popular belief. Also keep in mind complaints tend to be the vocal minority, so the vast majority of people who have positive experiences are not going to get on a forum to about it.

Good luck to you, hopefully you will have no problems in the future :)
