Hello there, I'm new to the forums and I was wondering how to find out whether I am looking at the R1 or R2 version on the Dell Website. When I select "M11x" on the site, it gives me 4 options to choose from: Economy, Standard, More Power and Premium. If it helps, I'm in Canada.
    These are the 4 options:
    Economy:
    Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo SU7300 (1.3GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
    Up to 2GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 800Mhz - 2 DIMMS
250GB4 SATA II hard drive (7200RPM)
    NVIDIA GT335M GeForce®

    Standard:
    Intel® CoreTM i5 520UM (1.06GHz/-1Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
    Up to 2GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 800Mhz - 1 DIMMS

250GB4 SATA II hard drive (7200RPM)

    NVIDIA GT335M GeForce®

    More Power:
    Intel® CoreTM i5 520UM (1.06GHz/-1Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
Up to 4GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 800Mhz
250GB4 SATA II hard drive (7200RPM)

    NVIDIA GT335M GeForce®

    Premium:
    Intel® CoreTM i7 640UM (1.06GHz/-1Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
Up to 4GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 800Mhz
320GB4 SATA II hard drive (7200RPM)
    NVIDIA GT335M GeForce®

Now after browsing through these forums, I think an R1 would be perfect for me (need the battery life for college, and playing some games when I have time). Problem is, I don't know which of the options is the R1 or the R2. I think I'm leaning more towards the More Power option, but I'm not sure if that's R1 or R2. Can you guys help me out?

    R1 = Core2 Duo
    R2 = Core i5/7

The first one you listed is what you want.

I'm a student. but I'm using r2... to be honest, it doesn't matter.

You might as well go more future-proof and get the i7

How long is the battery life when using Intel for regular internet browsing or typing out reports or w/e?
Also, if I were to pick an R2 model, should i get the "standard" or the "more power"? I really don't want to get the i7 because it doesn't make a noticeable difference at the moment.

You can expect to get around 5.0 - 5.5 hours on an M11x R2 (Core i5/i7 CPU), and about 7.0 hours on the M11x R1 (Core 2 Duo CPU). The R1 also has a VGA port that the R2 does not. However, the R1 has manually switchable graphics (via Fn+F6), whereas the R2 has Optimus which automatically switches GPU's for you. The important part is that Optimus is what will be getting the ongoing driver support. It is predicted that nVidia will start cutting back on driver releases for switchable graphics in the R1.

As for Standard vs. More Power - Get the More Power. There is absolutely no reason to buy anything less than 4GB of RAM.

Is it possible to cut back when the support by nvidia for switchable graphics doesnt exist?

So true... I hope nVidia actually releases a driver for Intel Hybrid Graphics soon.

If you can afford it, go with the i7 r2. Mind as well future proof so in a few years you're not stuck with an unusable laptop. Are you really going to need the extra hour or so battery life you're going to get with the r1? The charger for the laptop is really slim and I'm sure if you were in a crunch you could bring it along with you. If you can afford the couple extra hundred bucks, you could get a more powerful r2 and future proof yourself at the same time.

Make sure you get more than 2GB RAM in any model you get. Go for 4GB

It's really very simple actually.. the R1 has this super cool decal on the buttom next to the alien... It has a cloud on it in the shape of a mushroom and says "MUSHROOM CLOUD LAYING MOFO"

    This means it's an R1.

    Have a great day,

r2 has the icore processors (i3,i5,i7)
other than that its the soft touch black = r2 glossy black = r1
and r2 cost more than the r1
