When you plop down any significant amount of money on hardware, you best make sure you're getting what you pay for. Bad luck for sure, but I think my "fussyness" is warranted - any laptop or computer you buy shouldn't be subjected to McGyver-type mods and physical defects out-of-the-box.
And to answer the OP, lol, no comparison in build quality between the m11x and MacBooks. Someone shouldn't worry about treating their equipment "gingerly" or having it "remain on a desk"...

So do you guys think 599 is a good price for a baseline R1 with all stock options or can I haggle for better?

Haggle for a few discounted upgrades and that's about as good a price as you'll get.

$599 would be a gdlk deal for an R1. doit. Heck, I'd ask for an extended warranty over the sleeve case, you could probably get away with that.

I don't know if someone already posted this (I don't feel like reading through all the posts lol) but the hinge problem isn't too bad. One of my hinges cracked and the "Alienware" writing sort of looked weird but it's covered under warranty and I got mine fixed in a few days free of charge. I like my R1 but I kind of wish I waited a little to get the R2 or even an M15x.
The m11x is a great gaming machine and has handled many of my games so far BBC2/BO/MW2/Borderlands/etc. It's just it gets frustrating sometimes when I can't play with higher graphics settings due to the C2D 1.6-1.7 processor. -
How does it make you feel to know that the replacement LCD assembly very likely has the same chance of failing as your original one?

Does a gap on one of the hinges on my new M11x = hinge problems soon? There is no creaking or any odd noises. It's been a pretty solid system so far, I've been installing tons of games on it: WoW, LotRO, Age of Conan, Mass Effect 2, Sam and Max, The Ball (cool game, an OnLive demo made want the full version), and Dead Rising 2.

Not sure. Photo would help.

a new contender how does it match up with mllx?

edit: watched the video and its actually kinda neat. -
well after lots of research and thread reading i finally caved. I was going to get the 599 stock c2d but I figured with a 40 dollar ram upgrade and 120 dollar hybrid 320gb hdd it would bring me to around 760 dollars so I went ahead and got the Core i5 on AAFES with bluetooth for 777. I'm still getting 4 gb of ram and a non hybrid hdd with core i5 for only a few bucks more so it was kind of a no brainer for me... Should be here next week!
How durable / versatile is the M11X?
