I currently have a 500gb hard drive with 110gb that I want to back up as a failsafe in-case of something bad happening. Its de-fragged and virus free. I have a clean 120gb external HDD. What is your opinion on how I should back up my hard drive? The windows backup feature? Acronis? Something similar? Preferably free.

    Thanks,
    DeeVu

The built in Windows 7 backup is pretty good. The reminder features in the OS should nag you enough to keep your data mostly backed up.

Personally I've been using Mozy.com for a couple years now, and it has already saved me twice from laptop hard drive failures. It does cost money (4.95/mo) but unlimited backup space and you just install it, configure it, then forget about it.

are you trying to back up the data or are you trying to preserve the state of the computer?

I used windows back up and made an image of my PC. Took awhile but it was pretty easy.

To make an image of the computer. So that I do not need to reformat the entire drive and start from scratch.
