What key version do you have on the bottom of your laptop? Most I think are Home Premium. Then we will go from there.

The COA key is used as a backup on that machine, the bios contains the correct code for activation and it does it automatically when you install the correct version of windows. There are two different versions of Home Premium. OEM (what you have) and the copy you would buy at a retail store. You need a OEM DVD to reinstall and have it auto install correctly.

What I use for re-installs is a Dell factory disk. They are available for several different versions. Ebay has a lot of them. Just make sure it's the right version and bit interface you want.

    For example.

I have not personally used this seller.

You need the Alienware reinstall disk and not the Dell one if you want it to auto activate. The Alienware BIOS activation code is different to the Dell one.

I have never had a problem on a Alienware or any other non Dell brand using one of those disks. Just as long as the COA matches up. Home, Pro, etc.
