    Hey all,

Got a bit of an issue. The hinges finally went out on my r1, and at the same time the lcd got it's colors inverted.

I call Dell, and they can't help because I don't have the previous owner's info. After 2 or 3 hours on the phone "let me transfer you to someone who can help," I get a rep who tells me that the computer might have been stolen because I don't know the name, and so no service.

Any ideas? They will not call the previous owner for some reason to check.

    What can I do?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Unfortunately you would need to contact the previous owner to obtain that information. Where did you buy it? If you did it through eBay then try contacting the seller back. You can also try e-mailing [email protected]

I bought it on ebay, but I never got the previous owners info, and I have no way of contacting him.

eBay has a way to check on Purchase History, you could be able to track the order on your eBay history to try to contact the seller.

    Sorry for being unclear.

I have talked to the person I bought it from, and they do not have the previous owners info.

So there is the potential that I bought a stolen laptop, but I don't know, and Dell will not contact the owner they have on file to see if it was stolen...

I read that I can put "not applicable" in the online application for warranty transfer, but I only want to do that as a last resort.

I would prefer that the laptop is returned to it's rightful owner if it is stolen.

I understand your point now, I thought you received it from the original owner.
The police could help with that, if they have any reports of a stolen laptop with the service tag you have then you can give it back to them and tell them you bought it on eBay. Dell would not be able to disclose any of the info on the account and the only department that could be able to contact the previous owner to verify this would be Fraud Prevention. You could try contacting customer support to get to them by telling them the story.

Yeah, but it seems a shame to pay to fix something that has been recalled.

Dell has been really good to me on the other laptops I have had from them, but this is just lame...

Its not a recall, but rather it was a warranty extension.

The extension for the most part has expired, but dell is still repairing some under a "goodwill" warranty.

It is not a hard repair to do on your own, you will need a new lcd cable, and a tube of epoxy.

The whole repair takes about 1-2 hours to complete and shouldnt cost you more than $30.00 depending on if you break anything.

Ok. I just gave up on dell and bought some glue and also a new lcd.

I read that the issue was the lcd, not the cable, but I guess I should buy an lcd cable too?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Colors inverted usually is a cable. I would check your cable, it may just not be fully seated.
