I'm sorry to hear that. Guess some things won't be stable no matter how hard you try.

    word.

hey let me know if you need those pics.. maybe some other SLG user can get stable. it was night and day difference when i ran 3Dmark 06 but yea.. couldn't finish.. :(

got the lil guy back together and working again so at least I'm not bricked.. :)

Those pics aren't mine. Give them to Nando4- he wrote the guide.

Since you already got your hands wet, why don't you try the 300FSB FSLx mod? It's a 12.5% gain. You're not the only one with a CPU that can't make 2Ghz STABLE. :D :(

i thought about it but i would need to solder 4 pins on the SLG and i believe 2 of them may have needed to be lifted (cant remember for sure but a lot of work regardless).after all i have been thru i cant see my self doing that for that small of a increase.

i should just face the fact that i have been very lucky with the "luck of the draw" in all the CPUs, GPUs and RAM i have bought over the years have been awesome and giving me over 20% OCage. i guess it was time i got a crappy chip. its all good i still love this lil thing and maybe one day when i get really board ill do a heatsink mod and push 1.2v-1.3v to it and see if i can hit 1.95ghz or 2.16ghz in non-OC mode

id did learn something thing awesome after all this. you can OC basically anything with enough research and steady hand skills.

if any one wants any advice or pics just PM me.

    Yeah. That.

I'm all thumbs with that delicate circuitry. No OC for me. Too bad with an AW that they have to restrict it, and not just unlock it.

yea lifting these pins is hard. imagine triying to write your initals on a grain of uncooked rice with a hobby knife. well its a lil bit harder then that...

i know ill get back on the horse some day. maybe when i dont need the m11x as much. but right now its just not worth the risk to press my luck any firther. but the taste of seeing it fly like that in 3dmark i wont forget. i was getting 3350 total fps at the end of return to proxycon.

20% faster CPU, 20% faster FSB & 20% ram was felling pretty fast! props to any SLG owner that can get this done an stable. you will see what i mean. :)

I used 7 & 19 as well. But I used a 10k restistor. I'm not sure on the 1k restistor. You really don't want too much voltage going to PIN7.

    question for nando4

is there any way to see what (actual) Vcore i have right now?

im wondering if i have maybe missed something when making my M11x stock again. is it possible that if VID4is completely disconnected from the circuit (basically like as if i just cut the pin) that it will set a "0" in the logic?

i feel i am running hotter than before, my CPU temps are idling around 45c before they idled around 38c and the room temp is only 2f higher. not to mention i replaced the TIM which originally dropped my temps about 4c from the stock TIM.

i guess what im thinking may be the case here is that i never was over volted when running 2.0ghz (via VID4 removed from circuit to 10k to gnd or VID4 to 33OHM to gnd). but... i am over volted now with VID4 totally disconnected from the circuit? if this is possibly true im going back in to hook PIN7 to PIN19 again.

    thanks again for any help

also, DavyGT. have you successfully completed any of the vol mods yet? results?

The voltage regulator datasheet says the VID pins is set to a logic 0 when it samples between 0 to 0.3V. By disconnecting the VID4 pin it means you giving it 0V. In bios-OC mode setting the VID4=0 means you have increased Vcore from 0.9V to 1.1V, confirmed by the higher running temps.

Worth testing the 333Mhz PLL overclock again to see if this confirmed 1.1V cpu overvolt has improved your stability.

You can use a multimeter to measure voltage on a capacitor's leg but it's not practical when the M11x is running.

Pin, VID, disconnected and cut in the same sentence? Sounds like a reprieve for those solder shy and something I have to try. :D

I haven't done any volt mods at the moment aside from my failed conductive pen mods. I've been looking into battery life- I just don't have the time to run the tests, nor is my M11x the ideal machine-with Intel graphics activated, more power is consumed.

please understand tho, this is no easy mod by any means. i would easliy say this is the hardest mod ive ever attempted....

i cant really awnser you question. im not a electrial engineer and dont know what is considered too much voltage for that pin. nando4 is probably the best person to awnser this for you.

sorry i cant be more help.

I'm not too sure, but I think the resistor is used for reducing the current using VIR. I can't find much in the datasheet about current limits but I did see the PLL Overclock thread and 10k resistors seem to be the only type of resistor used in other PLL pinmods too.

I guess you can order the resistors online <strike>or get 10 1k resistors and make a series circuit out of them, daisy chaining them and then use it like it's a 10k resistor, as resistance adds in series.</strike> NVM that, I forgotten voltage changes across each resistor.

Have not read through the entire thread yet, just the first 12 pages or so. I just got an R1 off outlet with the SLG PLL

Are my only options to overclock a hard mod?

yes. technicaly both PLLs require a hard mod. but the SLG PLL wont allow you to use software to control the clock speed. so you only have a few options. 300/333/400mhz FSB.

it seems most users are getting just under 2.0ghz on the stock voltage. so with that in mind with out a volt mod you may not be stable. so far i am the only one here that has done the mod on the SLG and it worked (333mhz FSB @ 2.0ghz) but i was not stable. i did try a volt mod but to be completely honest i dont know if i really obtained a higher Vcore.

i am going to try to test this theory in the next week or so if not tonight.

im not really sure what your asking....

to overclock a M11x R1 past the stock 1.3ghz or 1.6ghz (with a SLG PLL) you only have a few options.

    1.8ghz, 2.0ghz or 2.4ghz in overclock mode.

    or

    1.95ghz, 2.16ghz or 2.6ghz in non-overclock mode.

all of those options require you to hard mod you laptop in some way. and is a very hard procedure to pull off (YOU MAY BREAK YOUR LAPTOP!). the way your saying with PIN7 to 10k resistor to PIN19 will set you to 2.0ghz in OC mode or 2.4ghz in non OC mode. you may not be stable with out a volt mod too (im not stable at this speed on the stock voltage)

other than that you got just the 2 stock options in the bios 1.3ghz or 1.6ghz.

honestly.... im not an ALIENWARE user.... but i have the same SLG clock generator..... im using intel core 2 duo t6500..... if i can pin mod the SLG clock generator, my processor will run at 2.69GHz (266MHzx10.5 multiplier)

i have samsung ddr2 667mhz ram and ive overclocked the ram last time and it can run at 1000MHz speed....... so i will have no problem with the ram clock speed and timings.......
how to add 0.1V to the processor using VID mod????

well i don't know for sure that your PLL is programed the same way ours is.

FYI: if your PLL is indeed programed the same way ours is jumping PIN7 to PIN19 via a 10k resistor will set your bus to 333 not 266, which would give you 3.5ghz....

as far as the volt mod, you would need to figure out what chip regulates your voltage cuz it very well may be totally different from the one in the M11x... and seeing as how i don't know what laptop you have i couldn't even begin to help you.

you may want to start your own thread for this. not trying to be rude but this may confuse M11x owners that come here.

You'll be looking at a different pinmod then. Connecting Pin 2 (FS_B) to Ground through a 10k resistor will give 266mhz FSB from your 200mhz FSB.

Look into a CPU socket/pin mod for a higher VID.

You need to disconnect Pin 2 by lifting it and then connecting the resistor. some guy can confirm this as he has done the mod.

You can cut the pin to avoid soldering but it won't be reversible.

Yes. Kinda like what JJ91284 did but you're connecting Pin 2 to ground instead. I don't think you need to lift a pin since I didn't when I was connecting a Pin to ground.

I found the socket mod for VID but I haven't done it. Try using Throttlestop to increase the VID first.

Everyone chillax abit, we're all looking to increase the clockspeed. It's not like the original thread wasn't unlike this either. We're all looking at the same SLG pinmod nonetheless. :)

Hmm... cutting Pin 2 without Overclock mode enabled on an M11x R1 will give 1.73Ghz, 1066mhz on memory and SpeedStep. Pretty much M11x R1 as advertised without SetFSB. You gain 8.3% performance (60s vs 65s in TSBench). Enabling Overclock mode will give 1.6Ghz, pretty much no effect.

ok, so tonight i got some time to my self to im going to attempt more power once again.

    the battle plan is:

retry 333mhz (OC mode) with the idea that i may have not fully restored my VID mod and am indeed running a higher VID as we speak.

if this fails i will recheck to verify my VID mod situation to try to confirm some things and possibly try to have a 2nd go @ 333mhz (OC mode)

if this fails i will attempt to make the VID totally stock again. after that i will try 300mhz(non OC node) in a attempt to get 1.95Ghz CPU/1200mhz FSB/1200mhz RAM.

the reason for this is the lower CPU/FSB speed combined with the higher VID of being in non OC mode may be stable for me, and since i have the HyperX memory i think i might be able to hit 1200mhz at those timings. one more plus to this config is if you want to use OC mode it will still work (in theory) at 600mhz CPU/400mhz FSB/300mhz RAM. which may make for a awesome way to browse the web and do similar light tasks with the possibility of getting some extra mileage on the battery.

now if all of these attempts fail i may cry like a little girl. after i wipe my tears away ill have a few options.

    -cry some more

    -try a higher VID and attempt 333mhz or 300mhz again. - :mad2:

-put everything back to stock and cut PIN2 for 1.73GHz (non OC mode) - not a total loss :GEEK:

-put everything back to stock. and cry again. :realmad:

quick question for DavyGT or nando4:

with non OC mode enabled the VID moves as speed step changes. wouldn't this make for a VID mod nightmare?

one of the configs i ran sets a VID 0.30v difference between OC mode and non OC mode.

im scared that if i try any of the the VID mods i had in mind that i may fry my CPU so for now im just leaving speed step disabled until i can get more info on this.

FYI: in OC mode it would seem speed step is not active regardless if its enabled in the bios or not. it stays a 6 multi and 0.90 VID and never changes.

    EDIT:

something to note.... disabling speed step with non OC mode reduced the VID to 0.90v and changes the multi to 6. RAM ratio stays at 1:2 however.

That depends on the VIDs being applied. Pretty sure if you add +.1v to VID, a range of other, adjacent VIDs will increase by .1v.

For you, since your stock VID is .975v, disabling VID4 would have no effect since it is already disabled for that VID, meaning you get the mod only with OC mode on.

EDIT: This is what I meant, where enabling or disabling a VID pin will give higher or lower voltage across the board.

    thanks DavyGT.

i think i got a good VID config now.

    @ jai554

here is a pic of the work in progress...

    2011-01-29_12-05-53_335.jpg

    2011-01-29_12-33-25_765.jpg

i got my soldering iron from radio shack. its a tiny 20watt and came with a bunch of different tips for wood burning and soldiering. i highly suggest using the smallest iron you can along with a magnifying glass. more than 1 light source helps too.

at first i was just using a standard iron with a modified tip and i was ready to punch a hole in the wall i was so frustrated. a standard sized iron is just too big....

i am also connecting the pin to the resistors with i single strand of wire. this seems to be the best method i can come up with as it allows for a little bit of flex.

just some notes that i observed:

i can pass 10 runs of Intel Burn at 333mhz (OC mode) but not with the 335gt enabled. once i enable it everything get totally unstable.

however i can not even boot at 300mhz (non OC mode) but i can boot in OC mode. with would say that im hitting a ram wall around 1200mhz (more than likely a Cas issue) and this may hurt anyone, considering im using the best possible ram. this may explain some things for people in the 1200mhz area with there RAM speed.

im going to retry the VID mod now. 1.1v for another attempt at 333mhz (OC mode)

    UPDATE:

i did the 1.1v VID mod and saw almost a 10c rise in temps. this can basically confirm it works. all i did was cut PIN32 (or VID4) on the ISL6261 chip.

i still was not stable however! soooo i got to thinking and replaced the HyperX RAM with the stock 2GB. ran some more test and seem to be stable. here is a quick shot. (dont bother adding this to the front page at this time as this was done on the stock HDD and i will be doing more runs later on my other HDD)

i also passed Intel Burn 10 passes on standard with a avg. of 65(time).

im knida pissed that the HyperX is apparently bad. but more so i didn't rule that our days ago... ill try to run a more aggressive Intel burn later tonight after i get back from work and reconfirm with a screen shot.

so i appear to be stable @ 2.0ghz! :D at this point i don't even know if i need the VID mod. we will see.

wow impressive stuff. i just bought a brand new m11x r1 from alienware and im hopping for the ICS pll. il just go the simple pin mod way, although if i get the SLG i think i can perform this mod. im only 17 and have done a few soldering jobs already. i should get my m11x within a week, il post back when i start.

Kingston HyperX unstable at 1Ghz? That's below the CAS6 SPD speed :(. Congrats on stabilizing. Since you cut the pin, you can't get your .9v VID back. We can still lower it with more soldering on the voltage regulator.

Now, we need decent RAM that can hit 1200mhz for 2.4Ghz. At that speed, it's fast enough to beat a Core i5 166 with TS, according to my interpolation. :D

You guys are crazy. But I love it! Some Guy it says you live in Ohio. I live in Michigan. Maybe I can drop off my M11x to you one day and you can mod mine too. :D I'll pay you a case of your favorite beer. Hopefully you drink! (and are legal) ;)

hey guys i dont mean to hijack this thread but there seems to be alot of knowledgeable people here...

ADP3211 datasheet, Pinout ,application circuits 7-Bit, Programmable, Single-Phase, Synchronous Buck Controller

is it possible that this could be the voltage regulator for the GPU?

the 335m caps out at .9V which is according to the data sheet 011000... I initially though this was the CPU voltage regulator so I was trying to get 1V from .9375V. I was grounding VID0 and VID2 but nothing happened. but grounding VID0 and VID2 if this was the GPU voltage regulator would go from 011000->011000 exactly the same which may be the reason there was no change. Is there anywhere on the data sheet that says its only for the CPU i dont quite understand the lingo they use in the data sheet.

    Hey DavyGT,
i´ve ran some tests on my 2 week old m11x R1, and it confirmed the opposite using battery mark. With the nvidia on, the system went to sleep after 2:50, with the integrated graphics it took about 4hours. Both tests on 1,6GHz, full cpu load and windows media player running random songs in the background (to create some hard disk action).

    The images for confirmation:

That's exactly what's supposed to happen but doesn't for me. With nVidia graphics I manage 5 hours word processing and only 4 for Intel. Word processing is the only test as that is how I use my M11x on battery. Must be the drivers.

Hmm, I wonder if it's just your HyperX RAM, or all HyperX RAM. Guess if I decided to pick up a 10K resistor I'll find out.

I'm hoping it's just a bad kit too. It shouldn't be beaten by kit of stock RAM. It's supposed to clock to 1200mhz (an easy 30mhz overclock from the CL6 SPD) and give SLG owners 2.4Ghz.

oh its no problem, i cant put a blob of soldier to reconnect the pin, ive done it about 3 times now. ;) im testing each stick by its self right now to see if its just one stick or the the set. if its one stick im going for 2.4ghz!

lol yea i drink (im old enough too! :p ) id do it for $50 if you just worry about getting it here and back. thats pretty cheap considering it would take over 5 hrs to do the mod and test for stability.

id only be willing to do the 2.0Ghz mod (and 1.1VID mod if necessary) anything more than that turns into a 2 day project.

i dont know enough about GPU voltages to know whats to high but looking at the data sheet it seems the easiest mod would be to cut VID4 (i dont know what PIN that is) to give you 1.1v.

could you take a pic with it next to something for a reference of size .. like a penny?
