I downloaded the latest BIOS for the R1 that was released a few months back and for some odd reason, ever since downloading it, my temps have increased. After playing playing any game (such as Skyrim) for about 1 hour, my temps jump up to 40-45C. Is this normal or is this partially (or entirely) because of the BIOS?

It's normal. The newer bios updates increase the temperature threshold for the fan to kick in so, incidentally, the average temperature will be higher.

Search around the forums for a way to revert back to an earlier BIOS, it's what I did a few months ago.

The only other thing that I suspect may be causing higher temperatures, aside from the BIOS, is dust in the fan exhaust.
