Hey guys, this is a more windows-based question, and I was just wondering if anyone maybe had an idea as to how to get around it, since you all seem to be very very intelligent with computers. :)

It seems that our school has a mac-based internet(Airport?), and I was once able to connect on my m11x in school and browse the webs, but then soon after, it stopped working, even though the password was correct. Does anybody have an idea as to how one with windows 7 as an OS can get around the mac-based internet connection?

(Ethernet does work for windows, though.)

If you need more info to research the problem, feel free to ask!

School wireless systems are normally pretty tightly controlled, if your sure your key is correct then you may find it's actually not correct!!!.

They may also be controlling the system by the computers mac address, or by proxy server.

But the only other option is to go and see the school admin - and I suspect your not to keen on that idea!!!

Does your school mandate that you use a certain antivirus? Mine forced us to use McAfee in order to access the wireless and would block out any computers that it wasn't detected on.

Airport WAPs are generally the same as any other. Try deleting it from 7 and reestablishing a new connection to it to see if that helps.

    • Start
    • type "wireless" in the search field
    • Click on the "Manage Wireless Networks" icon that shows at the top of the resulting list
    • Find the one for your school's network and delete it
    • Click on the wireless network icon in your system tray in order to expand the available nearby networks
    • Click on it and the click the Connect button
    • Enter the passphrase they provided you

If that doesn't work then open up the Network and Sharing Center in order to see what the problem is. Click on any red Xs you may see there. This will kick-start 7's network diagnostics and initiate an attempt to repair the issue.

If that doesn't work then verify whether someone else is able to connect. Call the campus IT geeks and ask for help. Good luck.

thanks for your input :) unfortunately I tried that, a geek who had a macbook pro was doing that too, I think when I did a diagnostics it came up with the conclusion that there was a network settings error (which was obvious!)

No antivirus that we must use, as of now, but i'll double check, thanks for the input!

haha i think you're actually right with the mac address/proxy server, and I have no clue as how to get around it... and you're right i'll not be doing that now, will i!
