Is $799 the CHEAPEST you can get one of these things?

I am a graduate from high school, I have heard of some discounts such as free shipping from slickdeals (-$19.00). Also some student discounts such as 10% off select alienware laptops, those are for the ones around $900, but is there anyway I can reduce the $799 any lower to its full potential?

    I did calculations here:

    Order Subtotal: $799.00
    Shipping and Handling: $19.00
    Shipping Discount: -$19.00
    Environmental Disposal Fee: $8.00
    Tax Total: $77.90
    Total Amount: $884.90

any coupons or other solutions to make this thing lower?

that's about what I paid for mine. Not a bad deal. Plus you have to add money for extra's like gaming mouse, games, external dvd-rom etc...

    Good Luck,

Wait for a coupon or if you have a family member with a work discount.
    I got 10% off + $100 coupon on my R2.

Bestbuy and apparently walmart also carry them.

What are the main problems people are having with the r2? I am looking at getting one but was still undecided whether to go with the r1 or r2.

I am glad I returned the R1 and got the R2. The R2 is noticeably faster in everyday applications. I have ZERO issues with my R2 and every game I have played works perfectly. Best laptop I have ever owned...

So it sounds like it is just a matter of preference. How much battery life to you get?

About 2 hours less with the R2 (around 5-5.5 hours)...Not a big deal to me for the increased everyday performance...

$1200 ouch! Load up on the goodies from a third party.

I bought a pretty bare i7 model and got RAM and the SSD else where.

if you are buying the lowest stock setting i would save up a little bit to buy at least one 2 GB DDR-III Ram stick that way you can have at least 3 GB. 4 GB seems like the sweet spot and 2 GB seems like it is too small today...

2 GB is bearable, or at least for me it is. I don't run many programs simultaneously so RAM has never been an issue ( I usually use 1.6-1.9 GB of my 4 GB). And I don't think that RAM has too heavy of an effect on gaming performance either.

I decided on the R1, 4 gigs, everything else the same, and am paying 939 (with tax and shipping). I really don't think that is a bad deal considering I paid 724 for my Inspiron 11Z and it's not as powerful.

Overall The R1 is still a great machine. O/Ced its a great performer, good solid battery life, and manual switch. I have my R2 and I am really liking now that I got my LCD profile issue solved some how. You will be happy, don't worry. Its a great little portable machine with some power to game on the go.

The Military Exchange's portal to Dell is offering the R1 for $699. Of course it's the SU7300 C2D processor, but hey, $100 less than Dell's website is offering. The only hitch is you need to be a member of the Armed Forces. :p
