I have an m11xr2 and even while just browsing the web, this laptop gets very hot. While gaming, it's almost too hot to keep my hand on the bottom for more than a few seconds.
Does this happen to anyone else? Can someone with a heat gun measure how hot their m11x gets? I'm just worried that all this heat will cause the laptop to break down much quicker than I would have hoped for...
btw, I have nothing overclocked.

-
it's definitely not you that's hot
-
@looking4pftnb- LOL
Mine gets hot, but it's not like, you know- X360 hot.I haven't tried cooking food on my R1
-
I played some Left 4 Dead today. CPU and GPU temps spiked up to 70C. The laptop palmrest/keyboard area felt warm at most; definitely not hot at all. At best my hands get moist and not sweaty while playing. This is with an i7 (160 overclock).
-
Some games I've played that make my R1 hot:
-Cryostasis
-Empire RTS
-Necrovision
etc. -
But Left For Dead 2 uses Source Engine and DX9 a game that even this machine is optimized for. Take the 160 O'C and see if it gets hot while playing a DX10 taxing game like Metro 2033 or Crysis Warhead. The 160 O'C I don't doubt is stable as I can get that (but I stay with 156 has that doesn't give me any stability issues after long gaming) But I've only had the unit for 48 hours and it gets much hotter than my G73JH. Now, I don't know if that's a fair comparison as I'm primarily a desktop gamer and these are the first two notebooks I've ever owned. So, take that for what it's worth.
I'll try Left For Dead 2 at 160 and see what kind of temps I get. Otherwise, when I'm running the O'C the laptop gets way hot. When not O'C temps seem normal.
Cheers -
The iX cores get a lot hotter, 100C max temp versus 70C max temp on the C2D. This means the iX cores will run on average 20-30C hotter than the old C2D chips. Most people report the i7 sitting around 70C during use, and that is the max temp of the C2D (meaning the C2D would shut itself off if it hit that temp), for reference that is 158F so that is pretty flippin hot.
-
Hm that would make sense but I don't have those games to test it out =P Sorry.
I don't know what else to say about temps. The only reference point I have is my last laptop (studio XPS 1340) which ran hotter than this not only on internal temps but external too. At least when this laptop hits 70C my hands aren't all sweaty and hot.
EDIT: Will the iX cores really run 20-30C hotter on average? That seems sort of exaggerated to me =/ Are there any C2D temps lying around to compare to? I know I get 60C max for CPU/GPU while browsing and I haven't done any graphically intense gaming but like I said above I hit 70C max with L4D. Although on second thought if Chrome isn't running anything flash related and my fans aren't blocked I get around 50C max. Plus my room temp is always 27-30C, which is slightly above the 25C that is considered normal room temp. -
Those are my temps from just browsing the web.
Granted, this is my first laptop, but it still seems kind of hot. Apparently it's normal though so I feel better now. -
No, its not just you. My R2 gets really hot at idle too! My R1 was so cool I could leave it on my lap or bed and it would hardly warm up. With my R2 I have to have it on a cooling pad
It is quite annoying, with this and the optimus issues I am tempted to return it -
-
Just got my R2 yesterday but comparing to my old Sony Vaio, this is heaven. I played Guitar Hero and it went warm at most. And that's in a hot summer night. My Vaio's graphic card got burned when I played a game during an equally hot day last summer.

I say this because this was exactly my experience with my Asus G73JH-A1, as if you've seen on the forums over there it's had it's share of issues too. When I first got it, I wasn't very impressed with it's gaming results as a desktop gamer. When I was able to get rid of any stability issues by figuring out what my particular "recipe" was, the difference was night and day.
I went from being moderately satisfied to flat out in love with that notebook now. It screams with performance and is hitting %75 of what my desktop does which is fairly beefy.
I am pretty trustful that we will see the same with the R2 once they get their Optimus issues worked out. Yeah, it's frustrating, but they have too hot a product to drop the ball on showing new customers that the upgrade and costs are worth it.
I think that with some driver and bios updates they'll get the battery issues fixed as well, as soon as they get the Optimus and the integrated graphics working in harmony together more.
As for the heat issues, I don't know. These are some pretty beefy components in a very small form factor.
I'd wait before getting rid of your R2
That being said, I wouldn't get rid of your R1 either. You can still find them at BB. I'm even thinking of getting one just for the heat issues. As the wife uses the machine on her lap more, where I keep these things on the desk and really only take them out and about when I know I'm going to be traveling for an extended period.
Keep them both. And tweak each one to use the best of their advantages until these bugs get fixed. That's a nice luxury I'm sure any owner would like to have.
The performance will be there, they won't a product this hot.

Anyone who is getting CPU temps of 70c for general use type stuff has something seriously wrong with their R2 or is using it in a dry sauna. Provided I'm doing anything but gaming my i7 @ 166fsb generally sits at 45 - 52c in a room that's comfortably air conditioned.
-
The hottest i've ever recorded my M11x R1 is whilst playing DiRT 2 on a blisteringly hot 32deg+ day
CPU - 55deg
GPU - 64deg
On average the system runs impressively cool at
CPU - 48deg
GPU - 55deg -
I was playing ETQW and L4D last night for a couple of hours and it did feel like the bottom was scorching hot but when I checked the temps the GPU and CPU were between 50-56 degrees.
Cooler than my m98nu.
The odd thing is that only cool air was coming from the vent. You could roast a marshmallow from the hot air that blows out of my 980 but this one was like an air conditioner despite the hot case. -
browsing web my R1 CPU never goes above 38C. Of course the fan will come on if it's around 39-40C and cools it. but fan doesn't come on as often anymore. integrated.
My temps during running a 3dmark06 is: max CPU 51C, and GPU 58C. -
What kind of surface was it on when gaming?
-
when I game flat on a desk it gets upto 70c on both cpu and gpu.
I put it on my zalman nc2000 and it dropped it to mid 60's. I can run some games tonight and post some screenshots of hwmonitor -
Is there any other i7 users that can comment on temps? -
No problem with overheating on my M11xR1.
CPU temp. hovers at approx. 37-40C with the fan kicking in around 40C. -
Mine hits 70 easily when gaming in demanding games.
-
my r2's cpu (core #1, overclocked at 160) temp reached 72 while playing MW2 for an hour. GPU max was 68. I was not using any notebook cooler.
-
wow that's a 50+ degree temp (F) difference. Difference between a hot-sunny day and a slow roast running in the oven..
-
played company of heroes for about an hour last nite on my bed, and it was very hot when I picked it up. I must say it played the game extremely well.
-
Should we be worried about how hot it's getting?
Maybe I should invest in a laptop cooler? Do those things even work... ? -
Invest in warranty and you should be just fine.
-
I've never known a CPU to fail, i wouldn't worry about it.
-
Mine doesn't really get hot, but the power brick is SCORCHING!!! I can pretty much fry eggs on the transformer.
-
-
You have to let the fan on the left side suck air into the system from below. If you do, she stays cool very well. This lappy is cooler than my last 4 others, business models included.
Only my Acer netbook is cooler. -
@OP:
You're holding it wrong.

J/k but seriously make sure you are not blocking the vents. If it's running on battery, it does get little warmer below, but it didn't bother me as much. The warm chassis may be part of the entire heat dissipation system. -
it doesnt seem too hot to me after playing a n64 emulator for about 5-6 hours.
-
For anyone worried about temp it won't hurt anything, the iX cores are rated to 100C, so it is not a danger to the hardware, only a problem because the laptop may get uncomfortably hot for you.
However, as I said before, the R2 will run significantly hotter, most R1's maxed out around 50C gaming, the iX cores will generally sit at 50C just web browsing and idle and max out upwards of 70C when gaming. Pretty big heat difference. -
but okay, as long as my system isn't going to die because of how hot it's getting, i can deal with the heat. -
A part of owning a laptop is maintenance. You have to make sure that all your internals arnt geting saturated with dust particles. As easy as it is to get some caned air and just use that, its alot better if you learn how to take your laptop all the way apart and clean each part seperatly by blowing canned air on it, or like in my case having such an old laptop that dust has started to imbed itself into the wires and turn into this almost wet material. In this case some type of electical cleaner, or what I did was just use isopropyl alcohol mixed with water. This probubly isnt the best thing to use so if you have a newer laptop take that into consideration, myn is 6 years old. This dampers your laptop and has tobe delt with other wise temperatures will increase over time steadly unteill theres a hardware failure.
Those temps though are very reasonable and we should pay homage to alienware on there thermal design they did with the m11x. Since I have a desktop procesor in my alienware the thing would always get very hot. Never had anything go out on it though, besides the harddrive. OF course there is things you can do if you still dont feel comfortable with your temps even if they say there ok in hwmonitor. You can lower temps in your computer room, get a laptop cooling pad, leave a window open before you plan to use it for an extended amount of timeif its cool out. -
You know, I just realized the OP has an R2, so ignore my comment as I can only speak for the R1
-
Does it run that hot with the old drivers before the 256 series?
-
< The iX cores get a lot hotter, 100C max temp versus 70C max temp on the C2D. >
At 100C = 212F, water boils ! I wonder if plastic melts at 100C ? You can cook & play Warcraft at the same time ! LOL -
what programs do people use to gauge and monitor their gpu / cpu temperature? can someone please link me the site to download it? sorry couldnt find it..
-
I posted this in the r2 owners thread, but in case anyone isn't reading that one, some of the power plans for AC set the minimum processor speed at 100%, preventing it from underclocking when it doesn't need to use the whole frequency. I was hovering in the mid 50s C with the low 50s the absolute minimum (besides when first coming off sleep and such) when just browsing the Internet, and since changing it to 5%, it is in the mid 40s a lot of the time with the low 50s C as the cap--about 10 degrees C cooler.
If you want to do that, I suggest leaving the High Performance plan alone and changing the Balanced, or make a new one. I have found Windows will scale the CPU down a little too fast when gaming, and it can cause a bit of excess lag (actually, I do not know if that's true with Windows 7, but it was with Vista and XP). For regular computing it is unnoticeable, however. -
gives the temperatures of your cpu, gpu, and system, as well as the voltage of the battery and wear level -
Is it just me or does this laptop get HOT?
