A router, some CAT5(e) cable. Plug one end into your ethernet ports then plug the other end into your router.

    Done.

Unfortunately you can not play in a LAN with Starcraft 2. There is no option built in game, you have to be connected to an internet connection in order to play. Not sure about other games but if they have a LAN option you can hook all the computers up to 1 router that is not plugged into the internet and establish a LAN game through that. That's how me and my buddies play Counter Strike.

If you're not going to the internet you don't even need a router. You're all on the same network so a switch will do.

If there's only two computers then a crossover cable is sufficient.

The trouble is that most games these days don't seem to support lan play.

If you dont have a router or cross over cable or internet you could set up an adhoc lan between wireless machines.

My friends and I used to do that all the time to have LAN parties anywhere.

Now we have BS garbage DRM killing that though. No adboh LAN for Starcraft 2 or Black Ops or any Ubi game but RUSE.

And it's only going to get worse.

Just connect both computers with an ethernet cable, set the computers in the same Workgroup in PC properties, there you go.

No need for crossover cables; that's for old computers.
Reference: Ethernet crossover cable - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I directly connected my m11x with my friend's 08' Desktop and we played Dawn of War.
He also had a router so we plugged both computers to it, the modem to the router's internet port, and we had internet setup quickly that way.

That's true, just about every onboard nic is going to auto-mdix. I still prefer to use a crossover. Also, using a workgroup is a backwards way to do it.
    >Right click on the network icon in the system tray.
    >network and sharing
    >change adapter settings
    >right click local area connection
    >properties
    >put the computers on the same subnet
(i prefer 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, with 255.255.255.252 as the subnet mask)
The advantage of this over changing the workgroup is that this doesn't require a restart and can be undone by going back to lan properties and switching back to DHCP

There's no reason to use a router as there's no need to route. If you're not connecting to another network and you don't want to cannibalize a router from a network that's already setup you can save some greenbacks and just buy a simple switch- a cheap one too since for some unknown reason our computers don't have gigabit lan.
