Plastic was not a good idea when they released the M17 (not x).

The internal chassis is aluminum, the outside casing is a very durable plastic. It's lush though.
-
Worth adding that the bottom part of the laptop is metal - which rocks!
The plastic of the case is very durable indeed, yet the palmrest part of my R1 tends to get slight discoloration issues after prolonged usage. As of now, alcohol helps... err, that sounded strong, yet I merely wipe the palmrest with an alcohol solution... but i won't be surprised if It eventually got several permanent darker spots as well. -
This doesn't seem to be the case with the R2. I've used my R2 for about 8-12 hours a day (work and play) for 6 straight months and no blemishes (yet).

Thanks for your input, even though I never asked for an advice on cleaning my laptop, the information might prove to be useful to someone else.

I'm pretty sure the outside is ABS plastic, which is good.

I can or cannot confirm the sense of sarcasm I am feeling from an above post ^x2

The internal chassis is magnesium.
-
I think is adamantium

Unobtanium?

Isn't the outside of the M11x metal, similar to an automobile finish? I thought that the R1 had that metal automobile finish and the R2 has a rubberized plastic finish.
-
All of them are plastic. The R1 has a shinier finish is all.

Hmm just of curiosity, I wonder if when Dell designs a new hinge if the lid assembly be the glossy plastic or the rubberized plastic, or if they will design a new hinge design and circulate glossy and rubberized parts? I kind of like the glossy personally, but rubberized plastic is usually pretty scratch-resistant.

If there is a fix then you'd have to believe they'd do it for all 3 finishes.
Is the casing of the M11x plastic?
