    Hi there,

I am a relatively new owner of an R3. All my other laptops that have backlit keyboards, I can adjust the intensity of the backlighting (i.e. dimming it or making it more bright).

However, I can not find a way to do this on the M11x...Can it be done?

    Thank you....

Just right click on the alienhead icon in the tray and select dim lighting zones. :)

Thank you...So, can it be adjusted to multiple levels of brightness? or just "dim" and regular?

OK- Thanks very much...It seems like such a basic feature that most other laptops have with a hotkey- maybe they could not do it in the m11x because of the different led colors....otherwise, it seems like a bit of an oversight

It can be done, you just need one of those old school volume dials from a old portable cd player. then you need to wire it into the voltage for the leds. Now you mount the dial to in the inside of the chassis with part of it sitting out.

Turn the dial for a dimmer.

I see little point in it really for a screen yes but the keyboard looks awful dimmed personally and I either have mine on or off not in the middle as it just looks like a weak backlit keyboard ;)

Not sure I would call it an oversight. When the R1 came out the lit KB option was not that common and likely skipped during online purchase for many anyway. If it had that and the other dozen wish-list items folks post AND a good screen as default many wouldnt buy it. I could barely afford or justify the $ in the first place.

What other systems with a small form factor have adj backlit keyboards with more than 3 levels? Probably not many. Of those how many have selectable colors? Something tells me their market surveys indicated colors>adj

Tip: if in a DARK room and wanting brighter keys, turn down the screen brightness

I totally see your point. All my other machines are 13' and larger. For instance, on my macbook pro 13' and SONY Vaio 17' (gaming) machine, both have light detectors that automatically adjust the screen brightness as well as adjust the keyboard backlight brightness (in case of the Mac). The only other machine I have with a backlit keyboard is a rugged GETAC machine which has a 4-level adjustable keyboard backlighting. At the end of the day, its not a big deal, since as you said the screen brightness can be manually adjusted- come to think of it, when I do use my macbook pro on the rare occasion, I usually do this adjustment manually to get it exactly to where I like it anyhow ;))

Seemed like a neat idea, so I wrote this program in AutoIt for the community.

    Screenshot:

    Links:
    Source code
    Online virus scan
    False positive explanation
    Compiled .exe

    Usage:
    1. Open.
    2. Choose a colour.
    3. Use Ctrl + F4 to increase brightness, Ctrl + F5 to decrease.
    4. ????
    5. Profit.

Stupid AlienFX SDK won't allow me to get the current colours unless I set it from within the program, this is why you must choose a colour instead of the program editing the current colours' brightness.

If you want to set a colour that isn't in the combo box, you can type in RGB hex values directly into the combo box. For example: FF0000 is red, 00FF00 is green, 0000FF is blue.

Alternatively, you can use AlienFX Lite, this also allows you to set the brightness of the colours.

    gl, hf.

Not for me but that is a quick and clever response to an inquiry!
