    Hey guys,
I just bought an m11x r1 and it will be here on Wednesday. Are there any must have tweaks or programs that I need?

Or if you guys could direct me to a thread that would answer my questions about this topic.

    Thanks

    cc cleaner

Upgrade the wifi card to the 6200 card (much better range)
Upgrade HDD (unless you got a good one already)

I just received mine a couple of days ago. My biggest recommendation would be to uninstall the Dell provided Synaptics touchpad driver and get the one off of Synaptics website. It enables multitouch features including 2 finger scrolling and seems more responsive in general.

    Here's my typical suite:

    ccleaner
    glary utilities
    malwarebytes anti-malware
avast anti-virus or Microsoft security essentials (both are free and good)
    irfanview
    gimp
    CPU-Z
    HWMonitor
    Fraps
    Steam
    Daemon Tools Lite
    Adobe Reader
    Adobe Flash Player
    Update directx (microsoft.com/directx)

This is all after a clean install with drivers updated, etc.

Drop both of these for MSI afterburner. It is basically a re-skinned (but slightly cut down*) Riva tuner (overclocking with multiple profiles) and has far more monitoring features than Fraps.

*It is essentially missing the more advanced features but tbh I doubt most of use would ever use them. If you do need them at some point you can always download RT anyway.

Didn't like msi. In my original post I meant to say EVGA precision. It's what I used with the m11x. FRAPs is lite and I can turn down the process priority and still record videos with it. That's why I choose FRAPS myself. Just my .02

    Hey StevenX,

I've never used Precision before and I'm afraid that I might ruin something trying to overclock the GPU. Any suggestions for a beginner using the program?

    Thanks for your time,

    Troy

I'd also add Inkscape to the list. Doesn't do meshed gradients, but it's an interesting lite (and free) drawing package.

    FileZilla FTP Client
    DVD Decrypter
    ImgBurn

On an M11xR1, enabled nVidia GPU.

Keep the Memory clock below 860 and the linked core clock around 520.

These settings should be stable in most games on most GT335M.

These are conservitive figures and for testing you can go much higher, but will loose stability.
A GT335M will 'reset' itself if it can't maintain a high clock setting.
On most M11xR1 as they run fairly cool, MOSTLY heat is kept to a level managable by the GPU even when over-clocked.
In general you're looking at no more than 60-70C on a M11xR1 BIOS A05.

@troy - Start at stock clocks. Make sure cpu and shader are linked (this means as cpu goes up so does the shader speed).

Raise the clocks for cpu and memory in incriments of 10. Test with a game that pushes your gpu hard like (metro 2033 or just cause 2). If it's stable raise the clocks up another 10. If your screen looks strange or you start to glitch or CTD then back the clocks up. I used to play with my clocks at 550 cpu and 850 mem. I could go much higher but that was good enough for most games.

Good luck and please remember that OVERCLOCKING THE GPU CAN DAMAGE IT! You overclock at your OWN RISK! (small print... Overclocking is not endorsed by Notebook review forums or it's associates)

I am still experimenting with this one.... when I had the original HDD in, and I disabled speedstep along with OC'ing, I would see the FPS in games cycle under load indicating it was throttling. Now, I upgraded to an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD drive and I don't see this when I enable OC'ing and disabled Speedstep together. Combined with disabling Avast AV shields and running GameBooster (licensed) I probably pick up 4 frames and there is far less dipping of FPS and hitching.

This thread is definitely helping me out too. Thanks everyone. Btw, is there a guide on how to overclock the m11x r1 on this forum? And if the GPU is damaged as a result of overclocking, is it covered under Dell's warranty?
