Just ordered a black r2, i7640um, 256gb SSD. Ship date says 7/15/10 - crazy!
Are there any tips/tricks to do to getting the unit sooner, almost 1 month wait just seems crazy to me?

Just about everyone is getting it in under 14 days. On average it's been about 10.

Unless yours is a pre-configured configuration, or you ordered it through EPP, there isn't a way to get it faster outside of hounding the reps for NBD shipping.
Did you hound at the rep for free NBD yet? -
NBD is next day shipping? If so, no I didn't even talk to a rep when I ordered it. Just configured it and ordered. However, I already put next day shipping on the order so I guess there's nothing I can do except wait =)

wow how much did you spend
256gig SSD is pretty pricey -
Most people are getting them in 10 days? I hope so. Ordered mine on 6/12 and it's still "in production".
I'd love to have it for a trip this weekend but as it is the ETA is 7/7. -
You are supposed to order it with standard shipping, and then call like 2 days later and say that you need the laptop for work. They will bump up the shipping and maybe expedite the order.
Got mine in 1 week of ordering after doing that! -
Can you do the fast track config through epp if you call?

The SSD was an extra $570 I think?
So the overall price was about $1800 after tax etc. I figured I could save the $570 and get a small intel from newegg, but those are only 80gb (almost $500 anyway for the 160GB) - and the performance difference is so negligible between a non-intel ssd and an intel ssd - that I'd rather take the extra 100-200 or-so GB than a small increase in performance and lose out on all that space. Besides, after having SSD in my main rig, I will never go back to standard hard drives. The performance increase is huge IMO. -
congrats on your new machine when it gets there!

I ordered mine the morning they were announced (6/8)and my EDD was 7/4. I received it on 6/15.

I opted not getting the Dell provided SSD. I'm not even sure what kind of drive they give you. I have a Patriot TorqX in my desktop and ended up ordering one of the New Patriot Inferno SSD drives. Those are claiming 285MB/sec read/write.
Intel one is good too. I find difference in performance between a cheap SSD and a good one is huge. -
I ordered through EPP on the 16th, called the following day and asked about expediting the order and changing to NBD shipping. They followed up the next day by changing my delivery date from 7/13 to 7/9, and changing the shipping to NBD, but I didn't get a call back from the representative I had spoken with until this afternoon. She confirmed the NBD shipping and said that she was still working for further expedition of the delivery date. So we will see what happens.

the order placed on 6/10/10 unfortunately still has a estimated delivery date 7/9/10. i may call and ask them if they can speed it up i am getting inpatient! i just got to remember that patience is good to have and worrying about an extra week for a laptop is nothing compared to the poverty in 3rd world countries. i don't mean to sound preachy, but when my biggest concern is impatience over the delivery date for a notebook it refocuses me on how grateful i should be for my life as a whole.
