I have just ordered an M11x R1 version but the longer I have waited the more I am drawn to the R3 version.

Will I kick myself if I stay with the R1?
Will I deprive myself from a certain age of games, like the most current?

Help please as new to the world of Alienware and want to make this thing last as long as possible.

The R3 is 2 generations on and is much better spec wise, but its whether or not your playing the latest games or not.

As a R1 owner since its first release i love it to bits, size, design etc but in all honesty i feel (personal opinion) that its starting to struggle with the latest games, especially as i output to a larger monitor.

That said if your looking to play games on a reasonable details level and be happier with slightly lower FPS that you maybe used to then stick to the R1 as i have no doubt you got it at a good price.

On the flip side, the R3 is the latest version, it is condierably more powerful and better equipted to play the latest changes, plus those that come out in the next 1-2 years, but this is to be expected and as such is reflected in its rather inflated price tag over the R1.

TL;DR. Get the R3 is your a avid gamer who requires the best and doesn't worry about the money. Get the R1 is your slightly price conscious and aren't too fussed about running everything on highest graphics.

If you have the money get the R3. if your on a budget you can get by with a R1 just dont expect to be getting playable FPS in all games without some pindmodding.

Im using my R1 as my main PC right now. yes it works and i can basically play 95% of games out but i know im making a sacrifice in performance for the size/price. but to me its worth it to be able to couch surf for over 7hrs with a sub $600 laptop that can game too.

What games are you playing? Can you pay the difference between the R1 and R3? Dell has a 21 day cooling off period from the date of order so you can try the R1 to see if you like it and return it if you don't. Not sure if there is any restocking fee as I never used it.

Bahahaha. Already wanting the R4 after less then a month and a half after the R3 is released after 10 months of waiting. This perpetual speculation makes me unsure whether to laugh or cry...

I've gone for the R3, thanks for the decision points guys.

I know that if I stuck with the R1 I' always feel like it could be a little bit better. Ordering the R3 I know that's as good as it gets (for now!)

Cheers all, I'm sure once it arrives I'll be beck on here looking for all the tweaks and tips!!

Nothing wrong with the R1, and it has less driver issues than the R2 series. Obviously it isn't going to have the oomph to handle a lot of newer games. Like everything in life, it's a tradeoff. If you are just a casual gamer then an R1 is pretty decent for the price.

also depends on how much money are you paying for a r1, it its 599 or less I say it's ok
my r1 runs a lot of games, and the battery life is pretty nice, also low temps, its a tradeoff, r3 is expensive right now I'd say.

Well the R1 is £451 GBP as there's a 10% off clearance in the UK so it is pretty cheap which is why I originally ordered, but I am buying through my company which means that I should get the best/most expensive option ;)

lol the R1 is still worth it... with a bit of modding it can be a whole new machine, keep that in mind.

I got my R1 just before the R3 poped up. I dont regret it for one sec, my R1 rocks. I just need a bigger HD for mine (justr went with the basic 160).

Yeah, I'm looking at an R1 now as a secondary machine... Getting quite tempted, especially after seeing the cheap price + the pin mod...

the pin mod makes it worth it alone, mine is running at 1.92ghz, way faster than it was when it was running at 1.6ghz. all I needed to do was snip a pin off and I got more speed. its awesome!
