Is it normal that the keyboard keys would leave shiny rainbow indentations in the bottom half of the m11x r3 screen. I just got it I am so pissed it seems F***ed up.

I just noticed when I close the laptop the top half of the screen veers up versus the bottom half is smashed against the keyboard. I am comptiA A + certified but don't know much about laptops. If anyone can tell me how to fix this I am confidant I can. I just don't want to part from my baby I don't want to deal with that.

Pics would help make things clearer but lets see if I get this right. The half of the screen towards the back at the hinge is sitting lower than the top where it rests on the rubber strips on the wristrest?

I will take a look at mine in the morning and see if it sits the same, but I've not noticed any marks from my keys on the screen. I've also not used it disconnected from an external monitor/keyboard/mouse much since I got it so not much chance too yet.

I have read about it happening though, and I know my old M17x's would leave keyboard marks on the glass.

Yes, I have noticed the rainbow veneer you describe. Not sure if its finger grease or other. As it follows the outline of the keys.

The best solution is for me at least this. Razer Kabuto. Fits perfectly and unlike the above can be used as a Killer Mousepad as well on the go.

I ordered a Kabuto from amazon for 15 but this is Bull**** you would think that they would hire 5 engineers to fix these hinges to a perfection. F dell

The problem you describe is actually pretty common for laptops that have a glossy finish. It is because the keyboard ends up pressing up against the display, and leaving oil / fingerprints on the glossy display coating. The solution is to buy some kind of screen protector or thin mousepad (like a Razer Kabuto) to protect your screen from this.

The same thing actually happens if you have a laptop with a matte finish. The only difference is that fingerprints / oil is a lot harder to see on a display with a matte finish, so you only notice it with glossy displays.

I don't think it would take quite a large feat of engineering to make either the keys or screen recessed to completely prevent this absurdity! This is total Bull**** I do not appreciate spending 1300 dollars on something that is not constructed properly or is defective. I think there is a way to configure the plastic screen cover or hinge in order to fix this obvious problem that occurred somehow as I don't believe any engineer would be that STUPID to making something like this.

You are right, they could definitely engineer the laptop screen to be recessed, and avoid this problem. But then the laptop would be thicker. And thick laptops do not market well.

Well point in fact, the M11 real lcd is recessed. I dont know why they bothered with the plastic covering making it lay flat.

Exactly. There wasn't really any compelling reason for them to have designed the way they did beyond that they wanted edge-to-edge "glass" in the marketing slick.

My M11xR1 used to get 'smudges' on the left of the screen from touching the keyboard.

Oddly now though after 1½ years, my keyboard seems to have 'settled' and with a bit of subsidence the left hand side doesn't seem to leave those 'smudges'....as much.

Lets hope this glossy screen thing is just a passing fad and IPS monitors will lead the way.

I have the same issue... my m11x r3 is only around 7 days old and I get scuffs on my screen. So today I called support and told them that I paid 1200 dollars for this machine and deserve a replacement.... or a tech to come down and fix my keyboard(recess a little down) he had the nerve to tell me to buy a screen protector. I asked if I buy it or they would..... I would have to so I then hung up.

I use a thin rubber kb protector. Keeps dog hair, spills, dust etc out of the keys AND can keep the keys off the screen. Bonus: you don't wear the keys

Its a miserable experience to have to clean the screen each time I use it. Its a miserable experience to have to remember to manually place the damn mouse pad on the keys each time I close the laptop. Its a miserable experience to have to take the mouse pad off of the keyboard of the laptop and store it someplace in a nice position each time I want to use the laptop. I did not sign up for this when I dropped 1400 dollars to dell F them they don't care its my experience every time everyday that I have to live with and its their fault for being careless. They are incompetent. I can't say I will buy another dell because of this. I am so pissed its not right. Its something BASIC. It impedes on the quality of the experience. This ruins the laptop for me I am miserable thinking about my laptop which should be a joy because its an Alienware etc with all the bells an whistles and I feel so stupid.

Yes it does kinda suck. However this is NOT unique to Dell so I suggest you never buy another laptop. Or desktop. I don't think you can handle the stress

If you really are this hung up on what you spent vs imprint on screen, then I still suggest you try the kb covers... Once in place it can just stay there. My experience with them so far has been positive

I feel your pain Dyna. But not only that, if you have the R3, you will also suffer the wrath of loud hairdryer fan noise when gaming/benchmarking.

These sort of "problems" should be expected. The keyboard smudging is common on many laptops, not just Dell/Alienware ones. Even my MBP gets smudges and those are built better. And because of the components inside such a tiny chassy, noise should be expected while gaming. Even my M17x's were noisy, but headphones cover it perfectly and Alienwares stay sufficiently cool.

Valium bro.... Chill out... You need to relax.. the stress your giving yourself is going to raise your body temp... and cause your pores to produce oily sweat that will get brushed off on your keyboard... its a vicious circle i know....

I had the same problem. After removing the keyboard and reassembling, I noticed there are 4 tabs on the left and right ends of the keyboard that need to be pressed into the keyboard "well". Hope this helps.

Maybe. Usually if not clipped in kb sticks up very noticeably. You will likely still have some contact though

If you guys dig through the threads (dead horses) you may be discouraged but some have solved their problem or I guess got used to it. In addition to the kb cover I also had added taller rubber posts/bumpers raising the LCD closed position. Either will solve the problem

Just use a Razer Kabuto : pretty cool gaming mouse pad and laptop screen protector wich , for the M11X , is the VERY PERFECT SIZE. I mean , it's just like Razer had made it for the M11X !

There where a few topics here already talking about it , but i had no idea of people who said that the laptop can't close with it , it close perfectly , and protect your screen while always having a great mousepad around. 15 bucks for it , give it a try !

ANYthing thicker than the gap closest to hinge when closed may stress the hinge. Some have more than others and is why I added taller rubber bumpers
