    System: M11x R2, i7

First and foremost question: Is there any RAM that is better or worse for overclocking on this computer? Gaming is the primary purpose of this machine. If not proceed to second question.

Second: Is there any RAM anyone would recommend for the m11x?

I know this has been asked before but its been a month or two since the last post ive seen so as technology evolves at the rate it does I was wondering if there is anything anyone would recommend.

Edit: I know RAM with different CAS values are better as they are slower. So i would assume that deals with question 1.

nooooooo. do not get the g.skill ram. its not good for overclocking. i recommend getting samsung ram, i have 2x2gb sticks in my m11x, and they overclock past 1100mhz cas6. and btw, there isnt a point in getting 8gb, if its just for gaming its a complete waste of money. when gaming it wont use more then 3.

pick which ever ram you like but 8gb does make a difference there are tons of games that soak up ram and 8gb does help in game performance does on any of my gaming desktops and my M15x,M11x. I build gaming machines all the time and they all get 8 GB of ram it does make a difference! Windows 7 is designed to take advantage of all that ram and it runs more efficiently as well

before i stole 4gb out of a used laptop, i ran on 2gb ram gaming.. it doesnt make a difference unless it starts to cache. and the cas latency does matter with the m11x, you can change the timings to achieve a better overclock on the processor. 8gb is way too much for running a game on an m11x, that money could be put elsewhere because i guarantee its not going to help one bit.

il believe a game running at 1366x768 takes up 8gb ram if someone here posts a screenshot, and what game.

Did you miss the point where he also said video production. and for mem usage try any new sims game,UT3 just to name a few and it cuts down on page file usage which is slower than direct memory access.

Or this but if you are doing video production the ram will help at the most your look at 70 to 100 bucks then sell you old ram and make a little back.

lol... unreal tournament? really? iv played that on 2gb ram just fine.
i can see the video production part he might need it, only if he was doing some very very heavy editing. (doubt it)

For now I don't intend on doing heavy editing but some classes I plan on taking next year will. Amazon has a 30% off computers components sale right now so I was wondering if now would be a good time as ever.

Thanks for all the feed back. Last question: I'm going for 204 pin right?

Edit: Scratch that. Found my answer iwth a little searching. Thanks for the feedback :)

one thing to consider too is if you run an ssd drive you should not be using a page file and in that case you want more than 4gb of ram. Just another thought.

I have too much work to get an SSD. :( I would love one but I'm using 400GB of my 500GB Drive and I just reformatted and put the essentials on.

I hear ya i can afford them but just can't get myself to pay that much per GB! btw this is just a taste of my game system which is pretty hefty listed in my specs. with normal stuff running and playing UT3 which is a older title and i get some hefty mem usage BUT the point is it can handle it easy and thats the point of having that extra ram you don't have to close anything if a game calls you while doing something else. It made my sons M15x just that much more snappy going from 4 to 8gb it is a fast feel thoughout the OS in anything you do. In modern machines you shouldnt have to turn stuff off to get top fps and more ram gets rid of the need to do that. Ever run any virtual os's? need ram there too. Be happy ram is cheap now i paid over 300 for the 8gb thats in my sons M15x and 80 for whats in mine and the wife laptops. But anyway you need to do what you need to do , Is the M11x your main PC? Hope you make regular backup if you don't i would get yourself a backup drive, I had many students come to me with the i lost my work when a drive went down! Ext HD , Flash , Cloud it's all your friend for sure.

It is majority gaming software through steam so no big deal there. I use google docs cloud when it comes to papers. I save all my compsci programs on server space. So the videos and such are just my family stuff so as long as I complete the film and upload it to my dads server site everything should be fine haha. But definitely agree with you. Alright I just decides to go with the gskill per your recommendation and those of people over at overclockers forums. Thanks for the responses. +rep :)

Unless you're keeping your machine until 2017 and you open 5 crysis applications at once; 8GB is useless. 4GB or 6GB is the best. G.SKILL is alright, Samsung I've never tried. Corsair is meh.

Like I stated in my title Im also planning on doing some video editting this summer so that is why Im going with 8. If I was going for PURELY better overclocks that could be done with a decent pair of 4GB sticks at 7-7-7-20 timings.

the samsung is good but the gskill he is looking at if its cas 7 will def oc better ive used alot of gskill ddr3 with lower cas timings and it always clocks up awsome. in this case with the cpu he has the ram he picked is the right choice. if its cas 7 @1333 then i guarantee at cas 9 it'll do 1600 and i've never had to rma any gskill ddr3 ever other brands i can't say the same. i buy ram alot with my business.

i just noticed the ram your looking at the cas7 is lower speed ram with your i7 you should get the higher speed ram if you haven't ordered yet.

Yeah thats the one I ordered. I posted a similar question on overclockers and they recommended that one. Should help out and it doesnt require the taiphoon flashing.

those are both gpus the 6970's are crossfire and the gtx 460 is running physx i was gaming during that shot and my cpu temps float between 40 and 60 which is also normal for that chip at that clock. and 80c for 2 6970's while gaming is normal.
too hot for a i7 860 is over 76c and my chip never hit that i have a prolimatech megahalem cooler on it. And unlike alot of oc's i don't turn HT off. this machine is rock solid and those temps are with all fans on low gpu fans on auto. if i crank things up i can keep all temps at no higher than 40c but the noise isn't worth it unless i have headphones on the temps you see there are the highest i hit ever. I'm sure there ok i've been oc'ing desktops since the 300a celeron days.
