I've pretty much decided on the Y470 at this point.

    Advantages:
    - Bigger Screen (same resolution)
    - better CPU (quad-core Sandy bridge)
    - better GPU (GT 550m)
    - more professional looking (good for school and business)
    - better audio system?

    Disadvantage:

    - no backlit keyboard
    - prob worse cooling
    - prob worse build quality
    - slightly heavier (4.85lbs vs 4.4lbs)

Any opinions on this matchup? Y470 isn't available yet, but should be before May...don't know pricing but I assume they'll be close, and the ideapads often have big coupons.

Why you are comparing a 14 inches laptop with a 11.6????
    Because it is light????

The best option for you is m14x...

m11x has a weak cpu... It is the best if you compare it with 11 or 12 inches laptops. But in 14 inches machines you can find a lot of better machines...

I'm comparing the two because they're very close in weight.

I am still considering the m14x...but it is a bit heavier than the y470 and the review said it got really hot, two big strikes imo. So I will wait for further reviews before deciding.

I called Lenovo yesterday and the rep said Y470 was supposed to come out on april 19th but is now delayed until may 3rd.

One of the biggest benefits of this laptop (for me at least) is the msata ssd and the associated 10 second boot. I am on-call for my job and frequently need to use my pc quickly and for very brief amounts of time. The quick boot will give me a big boost in efficiency.

I have the same issues with being on call. Honestly, sleep mode is as fast as it comes I've found. I sleep with the M11x in sleep mode on the table beside the bed. I get paged, then roll over, open the screen and its ready by the time I can focus on it.

I also use citrix and a Cisco VPN which are both constantly on. Citrix complains from time to time, but nothing a quick disconnect/reconnect won't fix. The VPN is no big deal either.

Get what you want, but being I play games, the M11x is a perfect match.

Honestly, my issue is that sometimes I take my laptop to client sites/meetings and the alienware just doesnt look "professional" to me. I would probably take my old sony vaio to client sites instead.

I think that the only system specs that meet my current need are the lenovo y460p, lenovo y470 and the alienware M14x.

I currently have a y560p and its just too big/bulky and graphics arent switchable so im opting for a refund instead of a replacement under the sandy bridge recall. I push most of my cpu/disk intensive stuff off to my esx server/san but from time to time I do need some heavy lifting so I require a quad core sandy bridge class cpu with at least 8gb ram. Discrete graphics of course are for games whenever i get a minute of free time.

Would the x220 meet your needs? Adding a vidock for gaming ups the price, but you'll have the small form factor, professional appearance and full voltage sb.
