Hi guys, so i received my m11x after it had been repaired, but I feel paranoid now that I have it back. Its basically a ticking time bomb, and the same left hinge feels a lil loose, nothing wrong with it yet but i bet it will break soon, problem for me is that I bought it at best buy, so I cant get a refund from del/aw, I am very unsatisfied with this model now, do you think if I ask to get another laptop model once this m11x breaks again and pay the difference to get it, that dell/aw will go for it? Or am i totally screwed?

Well what bothers me is that I had multiple issues with a dell studio 14z and had them upgrade me to this m11x, and now i have this one crapping out on me too, I guess i have bad luck huh? Hopefully we can figure something out if my hinge breaks again

The failure rate for Dell laptops across all models in the first three years of life is 18.3% (according to Squaretrade), so I'm not sure it's a matter of luck :p

The best thing to do is have a warranty for the duration of ownership. Laptop failure rates are way too high not to have one, unless you only keep it like a year or less before upgrading.

Google published a great report on hard drive failure rates awhile back Powered by Google Docs

They found 3% of drives fail within three months, so you're not the only one who that has happened to :/

Hard drive is least complicated to replace. Plus they are pretty cheap now. Hinge, however, is a whole different story.

This is my third (technically) Dell and all three of them run super smooth. I'm sorry that you don't trust in Dell anymore but I guess you got the short straw. Hope the hinge lasts for a good long time.

This is my fifth Dell computer, and all have been flawless in both operation and reliability. Four of these (including this M11X) have been refurbs!

Sorry you're not having luck with yours. Hopefully this Alienware will be just as bulletproof as my previous Dells.

I seem to have bad luck with pcs haha, my razer lycosa has been acting up wierd lately and so has my razer mamba, not even 6 months old either. Anyways though this sucks that my hinge had to break and if breaks for a second time, I will raise hell, I do have corprate email addresses and phone numbers(did some premature digging), and I will make a big deal. Hopefully my hinge lasts, I want to love this m11x, its everything I could have wanted in a laptop, I just wish it would last this time, it blows my other friends plastic craptops out of the water haha.

I don't think hinge breaking had anything to do with luck. It's a known defect. I've bought 4 computers from Dell (1 desktop+3 laptops), and the m17x is the only one that actually works fine now that they fixed all the quirks and bugs.

After reading these threads, I feel like I'm the only person with a properly functioning hinge on my m11x. I must have been blessed to have had factory worker #82234, the one who knew what he was doing, assemble my laptop. I ordered my m11x at launch, open and close my laptop multiple times every day, cart it from the office to home every day and haven't had an issue with it.

However, my hard drive has died once and my gpu fried once. But both of those issues could have happened on ANY laptop. Those are both common issues and I don't blame Dell for it.

I don't say you're "blessed". Statistically of course, not everyone will have broken hinges. It's not about assembly - its an inherent design flaw. There's just probability that will it break with use. That doesn't mean it will in each individual case.

HP's quality seems slightly better than Dell lately, but I just can't stand the incredible amount of bloatware on their machines.
