Alright I'm about to buy my next laptop, but I always get bit in the from some common problem that is not evident from light researching. From the dv4z having a retarded exhaust fan that essentially points downwards to a used G50vt that has a stupid overheating GPU heatsink assembly.

So right now I'm looking at the M11x and wondering if there are any common issues that people face, and how common they are.

    Thanks in advance!

Let's see. These are what come to mind, and all but the last are common to every M11x:

    1. The biggest one is that the left hinge breaks every few months. Here is the thread on it http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...creen-touching-keyboard-discussion-r1-r2.html. What this means is it is foolish not to buy a warranty lasting as long as you plan to own the machine, so factor that cost in. edit: I want to clarify that this is a design flaw, so there is nothing you can do to prevent it. Furthermore, most likely Dell/Alienware will not produce a fix for it, so you're going to have to live with the problem.

    2. The keyboard only screws down on the right side underneath it, so it sticks up on the left (only bothers some people and most get used to it)

    3. Perhaps because of how the keyboard sticks up, many people's screen touches their keyboard, which results in grease and dust from the keyboard put on the screen, sometimes resulting in scratches. This topic is covered in the thread above, also.

    4. nVidia's drivers don't support the M11x, so you must use Dell's drivers, which are broken for a lot of games right now, or use ones modified to work by people like Nautis and Kopicha on this forum.

    5. The led lighting does not produce some colors well or uniformly over the length of the keyboard. (Some colors are fine, however.)

    6. Manufacturing problems. In the owners threads, there are at least a few reports of them coming not put together well, the result of which is gaps in the case. I believe they all sent them back for a new one or had them fixed, so it's not a permanent problem.

Agree with corwinicre above. I would add..

It (R2) uses Optimus which has a few teething problems, but getting better with drivers.

Oh and it's cute which cause problems as a babe magnet?

it worth it! just bought a 2month old r2 from here, running w/o a problem. hinge seems to work perfect but well see how it turn out in couple months.

Also you should go see it in person, picture & reviews doesn't do its justice

Agreed, you can check them out at Best Buy, then buy one from Alienware/Dell

Damn, I just noticed the 20% Dell outlet coupon that expired yesterday. =/ I was also considering the 4820tg, but I'm going to wait for the next Outlet coupon and get a nice certified M11x for under $700. =0

had mine for about a month now, no problems yet. using dell drivers and haven't had any problems with the game lineup i use. we will see in a few more months on the hinge issue, but it appears solid and even. optimus kicks in for the games i use, then again most of the games i use are dl'd through steam and valve.exe was auto white-listed.
