after a quick search haven't found anything other than stardock's logon (does that even allow for changing the bios image, or is it just for the windows logon screen?) - has anyone discovered (perhaps even something proper from insyde?) any other way of modifying the M11x splash (boot) image from the 'ol red eyes to something... different? :p

I believe he is asking about the Bios boot screen with the Red eyed alien head. Not the log in wallpaper which seems to be what that is changing.

I am curious if you can change the bios boot screen as well. would be an interesting change.

I'd love to get rid of the alien head logo too.

Yeah, I would kind of like the geeky old-school POST screen with status messages.

Does the splash screen have a progress bar or can it be removed? I kind of remember that it wasn't there during 1st boot-up.

Me too, either that or a similar post to the explosion on the asus republic of gamer notebooks. Or an exploding alien head, hmmm. Na old post screen is better with all the checks.

Isn't it possible to turn on the POST screen messages in the m11x bios? I've never tried it with my R1, but I would think it's possible. Something for me to experiment after I get done with work today.

I have never seen the option to turn off the splash screen POST logo in any Dell or Alienware machine that I've owned.

That's a standard feature in mayn desktop motherboards, but not in any lpatop that I've owned.

It's been an option on a few of the ASUS laptops I've owned. I've never seen a POST splash screen I've liked.

We used to have a utility that would do that, but I'm pretty sure that no one has updated for the newer systems...

    I'll double check.

I too am interested in this. I sent my alienware in for repairs, and when it came back the alienware head splash screen was gone, replaced by some yellow text that stays on the screen for about 2 seconds before disappearing. I'd really like the alienware logo splash screen back, but I have no idea how to do it.

I tried contacting alienware's support but they were no help (they thought there might be some function in BIOS to do it if you have an R1, but I have an R2 ... so no idea if thats true or not if you have the R1). They also thought that the splash screen should come with the alienware bios when you flash it, but when I flashed to A03 (twice) I wasn't able to get it. So ... yeah. :(

Apologies for the closure folks. Thought you were talking about the windows login screen. In any case, this is a very old thread (hence the quick closure). Thread re-opened. Best of luck tinkering with the BIOS Alien Head screen.

The log in screen was easy. Its the boot up screen I was hoping for but it looks like it hasn't been done yet.

As far as i know, the splash screen is something that's hard coded into the BIOS update. Changing the BIOS splash screen would likely require moding the BIOS file itself (since Dell doesn't give us the option from within the BIOS.)

There was a thread on here, I believe it was under another laptop manufacturer altogether about hacking a phoenix BIOS, which might yield a result. Though if I remember correctly, DavyGT and some others submitted an M11x BIOS to the thread (in order to see if furthering the overclock was possible by way of a hidden BIOS menu) and were told that the M11x BIOS was basically unhackable. Though i don't think the R2 BIOS was mentioned in the thread.

I believe it was this thread, from the Acer Forums. I've been trying to mod it using other tools but it just doesn't want to work, not that I got the skills to mod it after the tools are working.

Yeah that's the one. I tried my hand at trying to poke around in there using pbe but I only got so far as that 'no Bcps found' error.
