I just got my 680UM ordered. Eta is early April.
What can I expect from this compared to the 640UM?

    Compare Intel® Products,

Will OCing go even futher than the 640UM?

It does not seem like anything else is new compared to the other R2's, so I guess this is R2.5.

I have already ordered a 160gb SSD with 285MB/275MB/s read/write, and 8 gigs of RAM. Can't wait to get my beast!

I'm a little confused. What are you planning on doing with that CPU?

    Expect .24 GHz faster CPU.

    Good luck.

See what it looks like and return it.

If he is considering replacing it in his computer that is...

Well slickie88 I hope to use it like a normal computer including gaming, not sure what you mean.?

And MasivB, that seems a bit much?
640 has 2.266 Ghz at Max Turbo Frequency
680 has 2.53 Ghz at Max Turbo Frequency
    That is 264 Mhz more..

What can i expect with OC?

Right, but does the M11x come with that CPU? Because the CPU is soldiered into the motherboard. You can't replace it.

Ehm, this is the M11x forum. So the Cpu will be INSIDE the m11x...
And, the title also states m11x..

Edit: Yes it comes with that CPU, already on the motherboard along with RAM, harddrive and many other things.

Whatever your particular CPU decides to give you. You could put two identical systems next two each other, and they could give very different results. 3 GHz is probably not out of the realm of possibility, though.

Oh I guarantee you will be able to get 3.0 GHz easy if me and others can on the 640. HOWEVER! and thats a big however. Some users can't even get above 140 MHz so its merely lucky of the draw. You can't expect anything but the best.

I have not got a link to it, as I ordered it on phone with Dell.

saturnotaku, thanks for a good answer. Guess I will have to wait until I get it, did not know they could differ much. 3Ghz + sounds awsome! Guess it is not the bottleneck anymore.

That's the single core multiplier. With both cores active, then you're really at 2.52Ghz (14x).

We haven't even reached 3Ghz with both cores active. Hopefully if the dual core multiplier is 17, it can reach 3Ghz. If it's 16 or less, looks like we need luck to reach there. Edit: Wikipedia says the dual core multiplier is 16.

Yes, it maybe in the best position to beat a CULV Sandy Bridge. With higher multipliers, we may find voltage to be a problem due to the high single core multiplier. The user with the fastest i7, csufy, is unstable with single core multipliers active but is stable with dual core active on his 182+ BCLK.

Because of the 16x multiplier when both cores loaded anyone can reach nice results around 2,7Ghz which can be nice improvement according to what we have now 2,3-2,4Ghz.
That 3-400Mhz can be really useful sometimes.

Can the processor take advantage of CAS-9 RAM or is it downclocked? I just might bite for that processor if there isn't any subatantial R3 news by December. I'm itching to have a laptop that has over 2.0GHz again.

I looked for this processor on the Dell US and Norway websites- it doesn't exist.

I'd be interested in having a look at what dell says you have via the service tag.

I dont' know yet. I just opened her up and took the pic, then went to work. Prob the integrated graphics. Will install SSD and Ram now. Excited.

I know it aint out anywere yet. An when I ordered it i asked for the i7, never knowing the 680 existed. I was not untill I got my order confirmation that I realized and called the seller to be sure.

    Yeah, probably.
    My CPU is now 5.9
    Ram 5.9
Graphics Aero 3.2?? (Much higher on the R1!)
    Game graphics 6.4
    Harddrive 5.9!? (SSD)

But I have a question about my SSD. I only get a score of 5.9, same as with my 7200rpm HDD in the R1. Also defragmentation is not disabled (But I think it got disabled on an old computer with SSD I had).

I have the Corsair Force Series SSD, and my buddy get well over 6 with the same disk. Any ideas?

Do you plan on overclocking Phantom? I would be very interested in the results.

For your SSD, is your SATA set to AHCI? Also, does it have the latest firmware?

That is a very strange score indeed.

That graphics score is pretty normal for an R2 as the Aero section of the test is handled by the Intel GMA only, unlike the R1 with the GT335M doing the test, which results in lower performance.

As for the SSD, try a real disk benchmark like CrystalDiskMark? That will confirm if your SSD is underperforming.

I plan on testing OC yes. But I have little experience other than the BIOS OC, so I am going to read up on it.

The SATA is set to AHCI yes. Might try new firmware, but I have read that this is a rather common problem. However it seems to preform as it should, all loading times are rather quick!

    I will check more tomorrow!

Yeah, will prob try TS soon. What do you guys use for benchmarking the cpu?

Also, I have several 60w adapters from my R1, this R2 uses 90w. Is it ok if I use the 60w adapter?

Mostly WPrime, but also TSBench and the CPU section of 3DMark06 also works.

The 60W adapters should work, as I tried my 65W R1 charger in my R2 and it worked fine. No idea on how long it takes to charge though.

Thanks, Wprime just gave me an unexpected error, before the program even started.

As for the SSD Benchmark, this seems a little low for a 270 - 280 r/w SSD?

    WPrime also crashes on me.

That seems to be a little low compared to this review (Different capacity, same controller). Try using Thottlestop to improve SSD performance, which is here.

Ok, got TS installed. But I am note sure what to do. I have set the overclock in bios to about 150, with turbo enabled and intelstep enabled. Can I leave it as this and run TS.

Also how, and in what order should I test things.

The topics seems like too much for me to read through today.

Anyway, last post was with FSB156, I got a bluescreen about 30min into wow. Put it to 152, got another bluescreen and reboot.
Now at 148, hope it is stable.. How can I know if this is my RAM or my cpu?

Since you're overclocking via BIOs, you can test the RAM with memtest.

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

For this program, you have to put it onto a bootable medium and boot off of it to start the testing. I let mine run for serveral hours.

There is another program that does it within the Windows environment, but I can't seem to recall it.

For CPU, you can use Prime 95, though it won't help you identify which component is responsible for the error ~ only that errors exist.

    - What I have been doing is running Prime 95 torture test on Blend, which places the most stress on the RAM. If it doesn't error out after 8 hours or more, I assume stability. Maybe its a bad assumption though, lol, I received an error on my most recent overclock at 8 hour and 15 mins in.

Cool. I will look more into OCing later, but I think the "cheap" ram i bought is the bottleneck for FSB above 150.

Anyway, some guy. How did ya get over 8100 on 3Dmark 06? Guess GPU OC aswell as cpu pinmod. How do you OC the GPU, I want to try :)

Because the site only ever lists an i7-640UM, this 680UM mutant is new... just checked the US site, still only lists the i7-640UM. Bully for the OP... love to see a 3dmark06 score once it's overclocked with TS running...

in fact looking more closely I don't see the option for the i5 anymore as an option, only as an overnight ship ... suxxor's I paid $200 more :(

I feel the R3's rapidly approaching the site now...

I just ordered the m11x-R2 with i7 Core 640U, 8GB memory, 500GB HDD. I chatted online with a sales representative and he said the 680U is not available in the US. I did get them to drop price by another $75 from the advertised $200 discount + $30 EPP discount. So, cost was $1025 with free shipping.

Pretty pleased but will be ticked if the 680U pops up on the website as available before R3 is released.

    @Docsteel - no doubt

(off topic) - did you change your hard drive to the 500GB Momentum XT or did it come with the M11x-R2? I've been thinking about swapping drives in my M15x... need to bump memory too.

Well, I have had a few scores at 8200 - 8300, with some GPU OC. And cpu at about 156MHZ.

But 100% stable My 3Dmark06 is only at about 7852. This is with 148Mhz and TS running with a very light GPU OC.

I thought everything was stable at about 8300, but playing crysis 2 I found out it was not. Got freezes after about 30min gameplay.

With CPU overclock at 160Mhz the computer will not boot, bluescreen after some loading.

Edit: Boosted up to 152, and set the GPU a bit higher:
    Result

But I bet it will fail Crysis 2, will try now ;)
