    Hi Guys,

Today I received my M11x :D However I am having a small issue with it. I have noticed that sometimes explorer.exe freezes... I can still move my mouse and use the keyboard, but I have to kill explorer and restart it for it to work again. This has happened about 3 times accidently, but I have been able to reproduce the problem numerous times.

It happens whenever I go into control panel, and it is still trying to load the items there, or if I suddenly go into an option on the control panel and then quickly back to the main control panel screen by clicking the bar at the top. It also happens when I plug in my External, and I open the drive up at the same time it starts scanning for content for autoplay.

Any Ideas on how to fix?

I have an M11xR2 with the Core i7 Processer, 4gb of RAM, and a 500gb hard drive.

Since it is brand new you might want to do a fresh install of windows because if the problems persist it will be a hassle reinstalling later on.

As Mister Chief said, reinstalling is probably the best option. Though if i do remember correctly a java update solved a problem i had very similar to this where it would have trouble rendering the java icon in control panel and crash explorer.

I tried uninstalling the old Java, and updating to the latest one, and it still didn't work :( I also have done a factory restore, and it still happened. I then uninstalled the old Java, and put the new one on and it still happened.

    Any other suggestions?

Yeah, I can confirm that I have this problem too. Just went into control panel and clicked hardware and sounds and it froze on me. It happened two or three times before and thought it was just me, but I guess not..very interesting.

Hmmm it hasn't seemed to have happened lately. Updating Java fixed it a bit, and uninstalling the Wifi program, and then downloading the latest ones, and pointing windows to that folder to reinstall the wireless seemed to finish off the fix. I have a feeling this is happening on options that have custom things added in. That's probably why the Sound and Hardware one is doing it. I don't know if this fixes that however...

i have got the same problem. i think it's just some minor flaw to the windows 7 from clicking too quick while a program is running. maybe, i dunno.
happened once while clicking into control panel, once when i was installing java i think. i clicked too quick somehow.

I have this issue as well, it's definitely not a Windows 7 issue, because all my other computers have windows7 and explorer.exe never crashes on those comps. It must be a dell installation issue of some sort.

I also can't get CPU-Z to run for some reason, throws an error, something about "parsing"

Properties under My Computer for some reason shows that only "3.8g of RAM usable out of 4g" even though it is a 64bit OS...

CPU-Z works fine here. Are you using the latest one?(1.54)

Yeah mine says that as well. It's because the integrated graphics uses some of the ram I think.

Are you overclocking? If so, try knocking it back. I had a similar problem with Internet Explorer on one of my systems. Very odd... Taking the processor back into the 140s fixed it on my system...

I am currently overclocked at 166, although I did not have it overclocked when control panel was freezing. It has not happened since, although I have rarely had to use control panel now that it is setup :D

as long as i don't 'rush' too quick on clicking either explorer or control panel applications, it seems fine.
everytime i click too fast, voila, instant hang.
i guess i'll get used to its feel.

    Explorer.exe isn't Internet Explorer.

@all - do you get the error if you boot into safe mode?
If not do you get the error when you boot into safe mode with networking?
If not then disable all external devices in bios. boot up regularly and see if you get the error. Enable one device at a time and boot into windows each time to see if you get the error. By process of elimination we should be able to narrow it down. (this is just a start)

Explorer crashed on me today. I have all the latest Dell drivers and BIOS. Apparently this is still an issue, I thought A03 BIOS fixed it, but I guess not. On top of that, when going into the BIOS by pressing F2 at startup, sometimes it will be unresponsive in the BIOS menu. It's still running because I see the system clock running, but it will not respond to any arrow keys. All this happens both when OCed and stock CPU speeds.

I'm not sure what to offer you regarding a fix, but neither of the BIOS updates had anything in their release notes that indicated a fix for what you're talking about.

EDIT: I'd start the support process with Dell and push for a MB replacement.

sorry to resurrect an old thread but i was able to fix this issue...

Control Panel Crashing While Loading WLAN Utility - Microsoft OS Forum - Software & Operating Systems - Dell Community

months ago when i got my m11xr2 (the i5 4gb ram one) i first had this issue and tracked the ^ solution down. after an alienrespawn recovery just an hour or so ago (mostly to see if it will ultimately give me better ffxiv performance and issues with the latest driver) the problem reoccured, and this solution fixed it again with no adverse effects.

    hope that helps someone.
