I already have an m11x r1 but when the r2 came out i was really tempted, so ive been waiting for a gpu update to justify the buy lol. So i was talking to a rep yesterday and he told me that the m11x is getting a new gpu next month, at first i thought it was just BS so i called back in and talked to another rep and they also confirmed the same info. thought i would let you know the good NEWS! at least i hope its true lol.

Nice!
It had to come, sooner or later

and If I have to guess... It will be only available on the R2, the R1 will be completely phased out...
That reminds me.. I need to hurry and list my R1.

slightly skeptical, multiple dell reps said the hinge issue was resolved when dell reps here confirmed there is no such resolution
-
I'm skeptical as well. As I just mentioned in a thread I just created that I spoke with an Alienware rep in their Florida home office who said there will be no new 400 GPU in the m11x because it's too big to fit in the case and the R2's are still selling amazingly well.
Now let me be clear - I'm just as skeptical at what my Alienware rep said as much as yours.
Frankly, I don't know what to believe.
But I hope yours is right and mine is wrong because I do want an M11x with a stronger GPU and will most likely be buying one if it happens next month and the benches show that it's worth it. -
Well, quite honestly, the HD5000 series could still be considered. No Optimus... but I couldn't really care about that
(just my opinion).
-
I agree. Optimus has been nothing but a hassle for me
-
I'm not sure if they would do that though from a commercial perspective; the m11x would be encroaching on m15x territory then, since specs would be almost same and m11x is cheaper... same reason they didnt put the 5870 in the m15x.
-
I hope it's true, in any case I might change my mind and order one, because if they refresh the GPU it's likely they'll fix the hinge issue
-
I dont trust what reps say at all, considering they aren't told anything that the company is prepared to do, because that would lower the chances of them being able to sell off the rest of the laptops they want to phase out. And either way they can't divulge company information to customers/public
. Most of the time they play stupid or actually are.
The media will be the first to get the news about the new GPU upgrade, not the sales reps/technicians.
So until we see this on an official news site or rumour site, I wouldn't hold my breathe.
I doubt they'll upgrade anything on the m11x until the sandy bridges make their debut. And we'll see cpu integrated Video cards and external Nvs/Atis. Also I think we need a die shrink for the laptop video cards (atleast for the Fermis).
thats my 2 cents. -
Interesting.. I wonder how my M11xR1 would preform with a new GPU strapped on the mother board with a bit of gaffer tape.
Sadly the bus and CPU on the M11xR1 would bottle neck any souped up GPU.
Mind you a four month update schedule seems pretty aggressive.
M11xR1 -> M11xR2 -> M11xR2 + GPU -> ????
So what do we get in February 2011? -
Personally I doubt it, and let alone don't care, what good is it going to do me and my m11xr2? From my understanding the chip isn't replaceable, and I ain't buying a third m11x. (I owned a r1 when it came out)
-
I hope they fix the hinge issue, and let us early adopters get an upgrade to an equivalent model.
-
Would be nice if the Add USB 3.0

A friend of mine who works for Dell marketing, said there is NO changes planned for the M11x for the foreseeable future. They cant keep ship them fast enough right now. He did confirm that there will be an evolution of the M11x, but nothing has been confirmed for specs or anything, and will likely coincide with evolutions of the M15x and M17x

And gigabit LAN. That's one thing that's seriously preventing me from using this as a VM presentation machine, with my VM's stored on a portable ISCSI storage box I made.
As far as the upgraded GPU. If it's based off of Fermi, I just don't see it. Fermi comsumes too much power and consequently runs way too hot. This is the reason why ATI gaming notebooks are more common. ATI's latest gen runs fast and efficient.
I hope Nvidia catches up next round, they're really hurting right now and this stupid Optimus issue doesn't win them any points in my book.
