I just received my Alienware M11x R2 today (fast-tracked). It comes with a 250GB 7200rpm drive, which was a Western Digital Scorpio.

I pulled the drive immediately after I received it, so that I could clone it over to an SSD that I had (OCZ Agility 120GB)

Yes, I can confirm that when I pulled my hd out to replace it with a SSD, I looked up the serial and it was a hitachi 5400rpm with fall protection.

I can confirm this hitachi makes a great external drive with a SATA external enclosure.

    Best Wishes,

    StevenX

I'm pretty sure my 160GB was a Samsung. I can verify tomorrow.

EDIT: I was wrong. My stock 160GB was a Seagate.

We ship most of the major manufacturer's drives in the M11x and M11xR2. There isn't a way to determine what you are going to get ahead of time - just depends on stock. There are obviously fewer options for SSDs. All of the drives meet the same requirement specification though.

The 320 that game with my M11x was a Seagate Momentus (ST9320413AS), which was replaced with a 500GB Momentus XT

The 320 now resides in an external enclosure connected to my home server.

I bought the Seagate 500 Gig Momentus XT and 8 gigs of RAM for $290 shipped at Newegg. Dell wants $500 for the same upgrade. Had they specifically labled the Momentus XT as the 500 gig drive they were using and maybe brought the price within say 40 bucks, I would have gone with the upgrade. I can probably sell my single stick of 2 gigs of DDR3 to someone looking for a netbook upgrade.

Hang on to it until the new set of atoms start selling. I just saw the 455 at fry's the other day. The last gen atoms (and many of this latest batch) don't support ddr3.

My co-worker just bought an Acer, and it has DDR3 (surprisingly), so I'm trying to get him to buy it.
