    Hey guys,

I am starting to wonder how much difference in weight will there be if I upgrade my M11x R2 from HDD to SSD.
I am guessing roughly around 50g to 100g change in weight so at the moment, it doesn't seem worth upgrading for lighter weight.

    Please enlighten me !!

Minimal but the SSD will be lighter. Surely you would want to upgrade for:

    10x the speed
0 noise as no moving parts
    Less power consumption
    shock protection

    Rather than weight? :)

Yea the weight difference is quite negligible, if you held an M11x in each hand one with an ssd and the other with a hdd i don't think you could physically feel the difference.

I agree with the other points though - it operates absolutely silent without the fan spinning, it uses up less than 5% of the power, and a knock isn't going to make the heads skip so when using it wile traveling it's definitely more reliable.

I see.. I am guessing SSD will enhance battery life by around 20 to 30 mins?
It's just the limited amount of storage available for SSD that is preventing me from the upgrade at the moment..

How much does HDD use up then?
I am confused with using up less than 5% of the power part.

I assume he means an SSD uses less than 5% of the power a HDD uses.

The power consumption is huge in comparison because there are no moving parts and an SSD only requires a very low wattage to operate.

Less than 1/4 of the consumption in the tests (below). So if you run on battery it is worth it + the noise difference is major when you go from SSD like I did before selling my netbook I could not believe how noisy it was. Then add speed and shock resistance and you have yourself a perfect cookie dough mixture ;)

Power consumption of a normal HDD is roughly 5.5W on idle and around 7.5W on load, my Crucial M4 uses something ridiculous like 0.07W on idle and 0.15W on load.

I made a post with the actual exact figures a few weeks back, these number are just off the top of my head mind you but they are fairly accurate.

    Maybe you need this:

Size is just about 2x1.5 digits of my finger and weighs like a feather ;)

Dunno if a larger capacity is available

It uses the HDD slot though, so there's no practical reason why you would use that instead of a full-sized 2.5" SSD.

You need to make a recovery media with Alien Respawn first, then use that to install Windows onto your SSD. That will automatically create a restore partition on the SSD.

Its a massive waste of space making a recovery partition on an SSD it sets up like an 18GB partition just to have a built in recovery.

As Rishwin mentioned created a recovery partition onto a USB Stick using Alienrespawn and keep it safe in case you ever need to reinstall windows. It really is best to do a clean install by creating a bootable USB drive with the windows 7 disc that comes with it as once you get rid of all the bloatware/crap and files that aren't needed you can also half the operating system size. I gained around 30GB in totaly by doing both of the above and when it comes to a 128GB SSD that is major.

    2052 grams for a m11x with hdd**
    1996 grams for a m11x with ssd

Both computers are exact same spec, same options but one has a ssd in it.

These are the ones listed in my sig.

**The hdd m11x doesnt have a wwan card in it right now, so I just put one on top of the computer for weighing them on a digital scale.

Yea when i held my SSD for the first time i was shocked at how light it was but when i put it into my laptop i barely noticed any difference. I DID however notice improved battery life (maybe 1/2 hour to 45 minutes)
